(?) Vallance
Last Edited: 9 May 2023
- Anecdote: Although the parents are unknown, this family has been identified from the will of their son, William Vallance of Portslade, made in 1760.1
- Anecdote*: When daughters Margaret and Mary were married in 1714 and 1716 respectively, the records noted that they were "of Hangleton" indicating that the family was probably living there at that time.
- Anecdote: The following notes are included here to aid further research:
There are baptisms in North Mundham in West Sussex to a Thomas and Margaret Vallance which could this family, although the burial of their son Thomas in 1700 would seem to discount this as the Thomas in William's will of 1760 is alive at that time:
21 Apr 1687 - William Vallance
?-?-1689 - Mary
22 Jan 1699/00 - Thomas Vallence (buried 7 Feb 1700 son of Thomas and Margaret)
23 Aug 1691 - Elizabeth
18 Mar 1693/94 - Ann Vallance
3 Mar 1697/98 - Jane Vallance (born 25 Feb 1697/98) (buried 3 Mar 1696 dau. of Thomas and Margaret)
28 Aug 1701 - Sarah Vallance
01 Aug 1704 - Catharine Vallance
Note also,
16 Apr 1730 buried Margaret Vallence - wife of Thomas, parish clerk
25 Jan 1704 buried (?) Vallance, base born child of Thomas
22 Mar 1739 buried Thomas Valence, parish clerk
Note also the other surname variants in the parish register: VAILLANCE, VALIANCE, VALENCE, VALANCE, VALLYANCE
There is a concentration of Vallences in Mayfield in the 1600s and this looks a possibile place of origin for the family. Interestingly, there is a marriage of a David Vallance and Mary Awcock 21 Feb 1660/61 in Maresfield. We know that Thomas Vallance and Elizabeth Pockney named one of their sons David.
There is also a burial of a David Valiance in Bexhill 9 Aug 1714 son of Thomas.
