  • Baptism*: William Holden was baptized on 13 August 1758 at All Saints, Beckley, Sussex, EnglandB.1
  • Anecdote*: Christian name not given on baptism but burials suggest it was William.
  • She was the daughter of John Holden and Sarah West.
  • Marriage: William Holden married Hannah Boovis on 9 January 1788 at Beckley, Sussex, EnglandB.2
  • Death*: William Holden died in 1819 at Beckley, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Burial*: William Holden was buried on 14 November 1819 at All Saints, Beckley, Sussex, EnglandB, "61 years."3
  • Anecdote: The Beckley parish register was checked and the date of burial for William Holden is shown as 14 Nov 1819 (i.e. before he wrote his will!). However, the date given for the preceding entry in the register was 17 November, and for the following entry the 23 December. If dates were entered in sequence there is a strong possibility that the incumbent intended to write 17 December for William Holden's burial, instead of November. This would then be consistent with the date his will was written, 7 Dec 1819.
  • Will*: William Holden left a will made on 7 December 1819 at Beckley, Sussex, EnglandB.

This is the last Will and Testament of William Holden Cordwainer of the Parish of Beckley in the County of Sussex made this seventh day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen and in the 60th year of the reign of our Sovereign, Lord George the third, King of the United Kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland. First I will and desire that all mu just debts and funeral expenses be paid and discharged by my Executors hereinafter named, out of the property I may be found to be possessed of at the time of my decease – then my will and desire is that after my decease, my beloved wife Hannah Holden shall have the free liberty to live and reside in my dwelling house (namely in the parlour and the chamber over the parlour) during her life or so long as she shall remain a widow, except in the meantime my Executors are obliged to sell my said house and appurtenances to pay any of my debts at my decease, and my will is that my said wife shall be paid yearly such a sum of money as my said house shall be rented at per year during her life or as long as she shall remain a widow and no longer, but provided my estate and effects which I may die possessed of will not allow such a sum of money to be paid to my said wife, then such lesser sum of money shall be paid her yearly as my Executors shall find convenient to pay her during her life or widowhood. And my will is that my said wife shall and make use of such of my household furniture as my Executors shall find useful to her during her continuance in my said dwelling house – and my will is that my son James Holden do succeed me in my trade, to live in my said house and to take all my stock in trade and all my household furniture at a fair valuation and to pay a fair and reasonable rent yearly to my Executors as long as my said wife shall live, or remain a widow. And after that period and after all the aforesaid deductions be made, my will is that all my remaining estate shall be sold and divided equally amongst my sons and daughters share and share alike, namely John, James, Henry, Sarah, Ann, Mary and Jane Holden or their heirs. And lastly, I do appoint Mr. Edward Playford farmer, and Henry Holden my brother, both of the Parish of Beckley, the sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament – in writing hereof, I William Holden the Testator have hereunto set my hand and seal this day and year first above written.
