Thomas Farmer at Merke
b. circa 1525, d. April 1591
Parents:
Last Edited: 19 Dec 2023
- Birth*: Thomas Farmer at Merke was born circa 1525 at Sussex, England.
- He was the son of Adam Farmer and Alice (?)
- Anecdote*: He was known as Thomas Farmer at Merke [Mark Cross] in the records, probably to differentiate him from Thomas Farmer at Crosse [Town Row Cross?] who was a different person, both buried at Rotherfield within one year of each other. His parents are identified through the 1559 manorial court record (see below) which mentions him receiving the property "ferling at Frith" from his father Adam Farmer, and the later 1587 and 1588 manorial court records mentioning the same property and family members.
- Anecdote: Towards the end of Thomas's life there are a number of property transactions in the manorial court rolls that involve John Nynne alias Barber.
At the manorial court held on 2 August 1587: (p11 of PDF)
Thomas Farmer at Marke [Mark Cross] surr. 1 messuage, 1 barn, 1 garden, 1 piece of land cont. 3 acres on ferling of Frith in R.[Rotherfield]. To use of John Nynne alias Barber.
A ferling was a division of land on the manor of Rotherfield whose size varied from some 35 acres to 134 acres which, over the years, became divided amongst several tenants. The ferling of Frith was located near the hamlet of Mark Cross. Each ferling was divided into six "swyne" lands, so called because of a custom whereby the owner of each swyne had to give the lord of the manor a hog (swine) every year. The ferlings are thought to be the result of consolidation and enclosure in the 14th century after the Black Death. The manor of Rotherfield court roll for 1556 lists a total of 32 1/2 ferlings (Pullein p73-80).
On 1 April 1588: (p22 of PDF)
John Nynne alias Barber prays to be admitted to 1 messuage, 1 barn, 1 garden & 1 parcel adjacent to said messuage at Mark Crosse containing 3 acres on ferling of Fryth in Rotherfield which Thomas Farmer at the court held on 2 August last surrendered to use of said John. Comes John Nynne alias Barber & surrenders above to use of Thomas Farmer & his heirs.
Comes Thomas Farmer of Merke and surrenders 1 soyne [swyne; Pullein p80] of land at ferling of Frith in Rotherfield adjacent to the lands of Herbert Pelham esq towards the East of the Kings way at Maregate towards Marecrosse & towards the West with appurtenances in Rotherfield. Said premises are held by Thomas & Margaret his wife during their natural life and after their decease by a certain Gertrude Savage daughter of said Thomas wife of William Savage & heirs of the said Gertrude for ever.
These transactions are probably connected to an overall inheritance strategy devised by Thomas Farmer, “of Merke”. John Nynne alias Barber appears to be acting as a trustee. In the last transaction Thomas and Margaret Farmer surrender another property (probably the land connected to the messuage above) to the use of themselves in their life and afterwards to their daughter Gertrude Savage wife of William Savage ensuring she inherits it. (p22 of PDF). The families of John Barber and William Savage are linked again in the will of Henry Aderoll alias Skynner in 1612 which names both families’ children as beneficiaries. In the will of Margaret Famer (Thomas's wife) made 12 March 1591/92, proved 15 Oct 1593 (ESRO: PBT 1/1/9/219A) she names Henry Aderoll as her son.
Other notes from the manorial records:
Court held 19 Dec 1588 (p30 of PDF)
The homage present that Thos Farmer at Merke incroaches upon the lord's waste & garden called Olyves garden.
At the View of Frankpledge 14 Apr 1590: (p43 of PDF)
And that Thomas Farmer senior on 12 Jany was outlawed at the suit of Thos Alcock in plea of debt Therefore he forfeits all his goods and chattels And that he has (divers?) goods & chattels to the value of £9 assessed by Edward Luck bailiff there.
(the above may apply to a different Thomas Farmer as he is called Thomas Farmer senior, not Thomas Farmer at Crosse).1 - Marriage: Thomas Farmer at Merke married Margaret Scot on 5 May 1550 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.2
- Anecdote: Margaret's will made in 1592 identifies Henry Aderoll as her son, suggesting that she may have been a widow when she married Thomas Farmer.
- Anecdote: Thomas Farmer son of Adam Farmer is mentioned in the Rotherfield manor court held 1559: "At this court comes Thomas Farmer son of Adam Farmer and prays leave to let 1 messuage 1/2 soyne of ferling of Frith containing 10 acres more or less to Alex Quaife for space of 4 years following the Feast of Annunciation [25 March] to the end of 4 years which per 2/- fine is granted. And Thomas Farmer comes & prays leave to let half soyne of Frith ferling containing 10 acres more or less for 5 years to Andrew Skinner from said Feast by fine 12d."
- Death*: Thomas Farmer at Merke died in April 1591 at Rotherfield, Sussex, England.
- Burial*: Thomas Farmer at Merke was buried on 15 April 1591 at St Denys, Rotherfield, Sussex, England, "at Merke."3
- Anecdote: Note that there is another burial of a Thomas Farmer on 5 Jun 1590 which is not annotated, but which is Thomas Farmer "at Crosse".
- Admon: Administration of Thomas Farmer at Merke was granted on 25 May 1591 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England.4
- Will/Adm Transcript*: 25th May 1591
Administration of the goods of Thomas Farmer while he lived of Mark in the parish of Rotherfield deceased was granted to Margaret the relict of the said deceased represented by Henry Atheroll sworn
The same Henry of Rotherfield husbandman and William Nynn of the same place carpenter were bound in the sum of 20 marks
