  Note: This is an oral "will" documented in the Rotherfield manorial records and is known as a deathbed transfer. At that time, it was the means by which copyhold/customary property (i.e. property beholden to the manor) could be transferred after death according to the wishes of the deceased. The Statute of Wills 1540 allowed freehold land owners the ability to determine who would inherit their property by permitting bequest by will but this did not apply to copyhold/customary property.
