"2 Mar 1763 Sarah wife of Thomas Waite of Tunbridge & dau: of ye above Thos Wickham who coming to assist her father in his illness Sicken’d & died ye day he was buried".
It would have indicated that Thomas and Sarah moved to Tonbridge. The burial entry for her father read "26 Feb 1763 Thomas Wickens in his 60th year".
However, their marriage was subsequently found at Penshurst: 7 Aug 1759 Thomas Waite of Tunbridge and Sarah Wickham of this parish, by licence. Both signed. Witnesses John Browne [usually signs, probably parish clerk], Thomas Wickham.

Edward Waite
b. 8 February 1733, d. 17 March 1795
Parents:
Last Edited: 27 Jan 2020
- Baptism*: Edward Waite was baptized on 8 February 1733 at Leigh, Kent, EnglandB.1
- He was the son of Thomas Waite and Mercy Hayward.
- Marriage*: Edward Waite married Mary Ovenden, daughter of Thomas Ovenden and Elizabeth Ashdown, on 29 December 1760 at Wadhurst, Sussex, EnglandB, Edward WRIGHT of Lye.2
- Anecdote*: There are two possibilities for the Edward that married Mary and had these children. One is Edward bap 1733 son of Thomas and Mercy Waite as shown, and the other is Edward bap. 1731 son of William and Elizabeth Waite, also at Leigh. Only an analysis of the children's names leads to a debateable conclusion that, on a balance of probablities, the parents are Thomas and Mercy Waite. In any case, their fathers William and Thomas were brothers, and either one would lead to the same WAITE grandparents of Edward and Elizabeth Waite of Leigh.
Postscript (1): The subsequent discovery of a gravestone inscription for Thomas, son of Edward and Mary Waite, enabled the discovery of their first child Thomas (who was not in the Leigh baptism register), and also strengthens the likelihood that the Edward, son of Thomas and Mercy Waite, is the correct one, as normally firstborns are named after the parents or the grandparents.
Postscript (2): The will of Thomas Waite, father of Edward, indicates that Edward has a son, also called Edward (no other grandchildren are mentioned). This is another factor to take into account in determining whether this Edward was the one who married Mary. There is no baptism in Leigh or Penshurst for an Edward, son of Edward and Mary. However, there is a baptism in Penshurst of an Edward, son on Edward and Susannah Waite on 14 Sep 1762. This latest fact needs further work.
Postscript (3): The will of Thomas ASHDOWN of Rotherfield, 1788, identifies Mary OVENDEN as the wife of Edward Waite ("Edward WAIT of Leigh near Tonbridge"). Mary's mother was Elizabeth ASHDOWN who married Thomas OVENDEN, a sister of Thomas ASHDOWN. The will can be read at www.familysearch.org (film no: 1886070, image no: 219). A search of the Sussex Marriage Index then found the marriage of Edward WRIGHT and Mary OVENDEN ay Wadhurst, Sussex in 1760 with the note that Edward was "of Lye" which is how Leigh is pronounced. - (Witness) Will: Edward Waite is mentioned in the will of Thomas Waite dated 25 August 1775 at Leigh, Kent, EnglandB.3
- (Witness) Will: Edward Waite is mentioned in the will of Thomas Ashdown dated 23 February 1788 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.4,5
- Death*: Edward Waite died on 17 March 1795 at Leigh, Kent, EnglandB, at age 62.6
- Burial*: Edward Waite was buried on 23 March 1795 at Leigh, Kent, EnglandB.1
- Mon-Inscr: A gravestone inscriptionfor Edward Waite was recorded as
Edward WAITE, died March 17, 1795, aged 68 years. (Inscription on the other side of this stone is illegible, but a stone next to the above, largely illegible, reads "left issue 4 daughters, Mary, Martha, Mercy, Ann, and Philadelphia". Probably Edward Waite’s wife, Mary, is also on his stone. She is probably the Mary Waite of Leigh who was buried November 4, 1815, aged 82.
Some figures on the stone may have been misread, as "left issue 4 daughters, Mary Martha, Mercy, Ann, and Philadelphia" should probably read "left issue 5 daughters, Mary, Martha, Mercy, Ann and Philadelphia".6

- Marriage*: Mary Ovenden married Edward Waite, son of Thomas Waite and Mercy Hayward, on 29 December 1760 at Wadhurst, Sussex, EnglandB, Edward WRIGHT of Lye.3
- Married Name: As of 29 December 1760, her married name was Waite.
- (Witness) Will: Mary Ovenden is mentioned in the will of Thomas Ashdown dated 23 February 1788 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.4,5
- Death*: Mary Ovenden died in 1815 at Leigh, Kent, EnglandB.
- Burial*: Mary Ovenden was buried on 4 November 1815 at Leigh, Kent, EnglandB, age 82 years.1
- Mon-Inscr: A gravestone inscriptionfor Mary Ovenden was recorded as
Edward WAITE, died March 17, 1795, aged 68 years. (Inscription on the other side of this stone is illegible, but a stone next to the above, largely illegible, reads "left issue 4 daughters, Mary Martha, Mercy, Ann, and Philadelphia". Probably Edward Waite’s wife, Mary, is also on his stone. She is probably the Mary Waite of Leigh who was buried November 4, 1815, aged 82.
Note that some figures on the stone may have been misread, as "left issue 4 daughters, Mary Martha, Mercy, Ann, and Philadelphia" should probably read "left issue 5 daughters, Mary, Martha, Mercy, Ann and Philadelphia".6
