John Carter
b. 9 May 1802, d. 3 February 1864
Parents:
Last Edited: 27 Jun 2020
- Birth: John Carter was born in 1802 at Chailey, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: John Carter was baptized on 9 May 1802 at St Peter's, Chailey, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- He was the son of Cephas Carter and Martha Scot.
- Anecdote*: Place of birth given as Cuckfield, Sussex in the 1861 census.2
- Anecdote: Place of birth given as Hosted corne [Horsted Keynes?], Sussex in the 1851 census.3
- Anecdote: The place of birth given for John Carter and wife Mary on the 1851 and 1861 census returns are confused and unreliable. According to these, one was born in Cuckfield and the other at Horsted Keynes. The 1841 census at Hortsed Keynes lists a family of Carters which includes an older person, Cephas Carter. Investigation of Cephas and his family reveals that he is the likely father of John Carter because:
1. Cephas married Martha Scot at Horsted Keynes in 1798, hence a strong connection to Horsted Keynes.
2. Cephas and Martha moved about and had children in Horsted Keynes, Chailey, Plumpton and Streat. He returned to Horsted Keynes where he died in 1842.
3. Cephas had a son John (1800) and another son Richard (1802) at Chailey which matches their ages (but not their places of birth) in the 1861 census where they are listed as brothers. Richard gives his place of birth as Horsted Keynes.
4. The John Carter (1800) named his first child Martha, his mother's name.
Based on this, I believe that John Carter gave his place of birth as Horsted/Horsted Keynes as this is where the family was centred, even though he was baptised at Chailey. - Marriage*: John Carter married Mary Stoner, daughter of Henry Stoner and Mary Marryan, on 2 November 1828 at Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB, both of this parish.4
- Residence: On 7 June 1841 John Carter and Mary Stoner lived at West Street, Reigate, Surrey, England.5
- Residence*: On 30 March 1851 John Carter and Mary Stoner lived at West Street, Reigate, Surrey, England, John age 46 years, Mary 42 years.3
- Occupation*: John Carter was a carrier on 7 April 1861.2
- Residence: On 7 April 1861 John Carter and Mary Stoner lived at West Street, Reigate, Surrey, England, John age 59 years, Mary age 52 years.2

- She was the daughter of Henry Stoner and Mary Marryan.
- Anecdote*: In the 1861 census, place of birth was given as Housted [no such place - most likely meant to be Horsted, short for Horsted Keynes or Little Horsted], Sussex.2
- Anecdote: In the 1851 census, place of birth given as Cuckfield, Sussex.3
- Anecdote: The Mary Stoner identified above (bap. 1811 at Cowfold) moved to Cuckfield c1817 (when her brother William was baptised there). Her mother Mary was buried at Cuckfield in 1823. It seems reasonable that Mary may have told the census enumerator that she was born in Cuckfield as that was where she lived most of her time before she married.
