Edward Coles

Parents:

• Baptism*: Edward Coles was baptized on 24 February 1739/40 at Weldon, Northamptonshire, England.¹
• He was the son of John Coles and Alice Oldfield.
• Anecdote: This remains a work in progress and some of the information here has been left to assist with this even though it has not been proven. The big question is whether Edward Coles of Weldon is the same person as Edward Coles of Oundle. If he is the same, then his first wife Mary Smith must have died before 1771 when he married Elizabeth Underwood. There is a burial of a Mary Coles at Oundle on 7 May 1765 which I have assumed is her, but one cannot be sure. (There is a burial for a widow Mary Coals in 1768 at Weldon but it can't be her). I can find no children baptised for Edward and his first wife Mary. (However, there is an Edward and Anne Coles having children at Warrmington in the 1760s resulting from the marriage of Edward Coles and Ann Hodges at Warmington on 20 Oct 1755. This marriage is too early for it to be the Edward Coles from Weldon).
  My feeling is that it is likely to be correct, as the naming of his first three children with Elizabeth Underwood then makes sense: Mary (after his deceased wife), John (after his father) and Elizabeth (after his new wife).
