Henry Packham
b. circa 1745, d. 1810
Last Edited: 9 Sep 2024
- Birth*: Henry Packham was born circa 1745 at Sussex, England.
- Anecdote*: Given that Henry would have been born before 1750, the only possible baptisms from the SFHG index are:
*******
1. 13 Aug 1732 at Hurstpierpoint, Henry Peckham son of John Peckham and Susanna.
2. 30 Jun 1733 at Hartfield, Henry Packham son of Henry Packham and Elizabeth.
3. 16 Oct 1745 at Cuckfield, Henry Packham son of Thomas and Margaret Packham.
4. 2 Aug 1740 at Hurstpierpoint, Harry Peckham son of Henry Peckham and Sarah. (Note marriage 21 Feb 1737/38 at Pyecombe, Rev. Mr Henry Peckham and Mrs Sarah Norton of Hurstpierpoint).
*******. - Anecdote: Our Henry's age of 64 years at burial in 1810 matches the 1745 baptism of Henry Packham son of Thomas Packham and Margaret Wood. However, I feel reluctant to assign this baptism to our Henry as the names Thomas and Margaret were never used in the family.1
- Name Variation: Henry Packham was also known as Henry Peckham.
- Marriage*: Henry Packham married Ann Penfold, daughter of Thomas Penfold and Ann White, on 27 March 1769 at Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB, both of Cuckfield.2
- Anecdote: Henry's wife Ann died in August 1782. Just before this, another Henry PACKHAM of Cuckfield married an Ann BARTHOLOMEY of Clayton at Clayton on 17 May 1782. Witnesses were Wm BENNETT and Hannah PIERCE. The child Henry PECKHAM baptised 13 Sep 1782 is likely to be the first of theirs. The baptisms to Henry and Ann Packham after 1782 appears to be for a single couple only as they are all evenly spaced every two years. This lends support to the conclusion that the burial of Ann PECKHAM on 25 Aug 1782 at Cuckfield is for Ann Penfold, the wife of our Henry Packham.
- Death*: Henry Packham died in 1810 at Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Burial*: Henry Packham was buried on 19 April 1810 at Holy Trinity, Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB, "age 64 years."1

26 Jan 1755 dau. of James and Mary Penfold at Billingshurst [Note: an Ann Penfold, pauper, buried 19 Dec 1790]
Underlined entries where father's name matches one of Anne's children's names and where there is no other marriage to discount this Ann as the correct one.
Latest developments: A DNA match in Ancestry.co.uk to user Janeyf57 shows a Penfold connection. They have a Sarah Penfold bap. 2 Nov 1788 at Cuckfield in their tree. When this line is researched further back the common ancestors between myself and Janeyf57 are Thomas Penfold who married Ann White in 1748 (first marriage) and then Ann Dudney in 1761 (second marriage). I descend from Thomas and Ann White's daughter Ann Penfold (bap. 1748/49 at Hurstpierpoint) and Janeyf57 descends from Thomas and Ann Dudney's son John Penfold (bap. 1767 at Hurstpierpoint). - Marriage*: Ann Penfold married Henry Packham on 27 March 1769 at Cuckfield, Sussex, EnglandB, both of Cuckfield.2
- Married Name: As of 27 March 1769, her married name was Packham.
