However, there is a baptism in Kemsing in 1718 of Mary, daughter of Richard Barber of Leigh. This is likely to be the correct baptism, as Richard and Margaret were married in Kemsing. Also, Richard and Margaret lived in Hildenborough, and could have been closer to Leigh than Tonbridge, and thus considered that they were part of Leigh. Although the baptism is very close to the baptism of Mary's sister Martha in 1718 in Tonbridge, there could be a reason for this (did Martha have a late baptism?). Note also that in the Kemsing parish register, there is a gap in the records after Mary's baptism, the next one being recorded on 14 Sep 1720, apparently following the induction of a new minister, or appointment of a new parish clerk, as the handwriting changes then.¹
