Elizabeth Mitchell
b. 16 November 1768, d. 27 June 1852
Parents:
Last Edited: 6 May 2023
- Birth: Elizabeth Mitchell was born in 1768 at Portslade, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: Elizabeth Mitchell was baptized on 16 November 1768 at Portslade, Sussex, EnglandB, surname MICHELL. Elizabeth's place of birth in the 1851 census is given as Portslade.1
- She was the daughter of John Mitchell and Margaret Vallance.
- Anecdote*: Note that although this baptism fits perfectly with the known facts (age at death, place of birth from 1851 census), there is a burial of an Elizabeth Mitchell in Portslade on 22 Feb 1809 which has not been accounted for.2
- Marriage*: Elizabeth Mitchell married Gabriel Gillam, son of John Gillam and Martha (?), on 18 April 1787 at St Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB.3
- Married Name: As of 18 April 1787, her married name was Gillam.
- Residence*: On 25 May 1817 Elizabeth Mitchell and Gabriel Gillam lived at Russell St, Brighton, Sussex, England.4
- Residence*: On 7 June 1841 Elizabeth Mitchell and Gabriel Gillam lived at Kents Court, Brighton, Sussex, England.5
- Residence*: In 1851 Elizabeth Mitchell lived at Brighthelmston Workhouse, Brighton, Sussex, England, pauper, widow, age 85 years, occupation nurse. Surname spelt GILLHAM.6
- Death*: Elizabeth Mitchell died on 27 June 1852 at Workhouse, Brighton, Sussex, England, at age 83. Age 72 years, "widow of John Gillam, fisherman", died of dropsy (certified).7
- Anecdote: There are inconsistencies in the death certificate such as naming her as the widow of John Gillam. However, this is accepted as the correct death certificate until proven otherwise, based on the unreliability of information from workhouses in general.
- Burial*: Elizabeth Mitchell was buried on 1 July 1852 at St Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB, "Workhouse". Elizabeth's age is given as 67 years but this is obviously wrong, as she has been located in the workhouse in the 1851 census age 85 years, and the burial record states that she is from the workhouse.2
