- He was the son of Benedict Thorpe and Susannah Brown.
- Marriage*: Benedict Thorpe married Mary Poolly on 22 April 1688 at Maresfield, Sussex, EnglandB, surname THARP.2
- Anecdote*: Mandy Willard writes:
However, Benedict's wife's name was recorded as Anne against the baptisms of some of their children. I have checked the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index and the marriage to Mary was the only one found. Anne/Mary Poolly's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. Either Anne and Mary were one and the same or Mary died soon after they married and Benedict married Anne almost straight away.
Benedict and Anne/Mary had 5 known children:
John Thorpe was baptised on 14 September 1690 in Buxted. His mother's name was recorded as Anne.
Elizabeth Thorpe was baptised on 13 March 1691/2 in Buxted. Her parents were recorded as Benjamin Thorpe, junr, and Mary. But this seems to be the only mention of a Benjamin, and Elizabeth fits into the pattern of baptisms for Benedict. Also Elizabeth's sister Judith named a son Benjamin.
Thomas Thorp was baptised on 12 November 1693 in Buxted. His mother's name was recorded as Ann.
Mary Thorp was baptised on 28 April 1695 in Buxted. Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register. She may have married William Brann on 3 April 1730 in Buxted.
Judith Thorpe was baptised on 27 September 1696 in Buxted, nearly 7 months after the death of her father. Her mother's name was not recorded in the baptism register. She married Richard Tugwell in 1724.3 - Death*: Benedict Thorpe died in 1696 at Buxted, Sussex, EnglandB.

The Oxford History volume on The Reign of Elizabeth, pp320321, says that the universities at this time were run down, corrupt in the election of scholars and fellows. So Giles was either very bright or his father bribed to get him in. Giles would possibly have been at Oxford in 1592 when the Queen visited there. The courses of study were limited to theology, law, Aristotelian and Platonic philosophy, medicine, mathematics, dialectic, rhetoric, Greek and Hebrew.

- Probate: His estate was probated on 5 March 1632 at Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Kent, England.4
- Anecdote: On 6 Jan 2012 Helen Wright writes: I noticed the entry saying that Giles studied at Oxford. I hadn’t heard of this before and checked it out. On looking I discovered that the entry certainly does look as though it’s our Giles. What really thrilled me was the further discovery that not only Giles went to Oxford. His brother Nicholas also went to Oxford on the same day to also study matriculation. Also Thomas had studied there a few years earlier, and John’s (1527-1607) grandsons also attended. The book is available from google.
There is a possible entry for John (1527-1607) too, although how to prove it is our John, is a different matter. It just reads : Thorpe, John (Thrope), B.A. supd. March 1537-8 See Foster’s Index Eeel.
The book Helen refers to is "Alumni Oxoniensis".
