John Mitchell
b. 24 July 1768
Parents:
Last Edited: 9 May 2023
- Birth: John Mitchell was born in 1768 at Ditchling, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: John Mitchell was baptized on 24 July 1768 at Ditchling, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- He was the son of Thomas Mitchell and Elizabeth Cottingham.
- Anecdote: All we know about John Mitchell at this stage is that he married in 1795 at Ditchling and then lived first at Fletching until 1805 and then Chailey until 1814 when his wife Mary died at 41 years of age. The family's stay at Chailey seems to have been temporary as there are no family burials there apart from Mary's. John Mitchell then disappears and his burial has not been found. The 1768 baptism has been used here so that the family of the parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Mitchell, can be explored in more detail to see if there are any further clues. So please note that it has not been proved that the parents are Thomas and Elizabeth and this is a work in progress. In fact, the evidence is not convincing at this stage so don't assume these are the correct parents.
Possible baptisms are (incomplete list):
14 Aug 1757 at Lindfield, son of Henry MITCHEL and Elizabeth
30 Aug 1761 at Edburton, son of Thomas MICHELL and Anne
30 Jan 1763 at Glynde, base born son of Catherine MITCHELL and Thomas WALLIS
1 May 1763 at Fletching, son of John and John MITCHELL and Elizabeth
4 Dec 1765 at Rotherfield, son of William MITCHELL and Deborah
6 Dec 1767 at Steyning, son of Thomas MICHELL and Sarah
24 Jul 1768 at Ditchling, son of Thomas MITCHEL and Elizabeth (looks promising!)
22 Mar 1772 at Steyning, son of John MITCHEL and Jane
24 Jan 1773 at Chailey, son of John MICHELL and Philadelphia
22 May 1774 at Lindfield, son of William MITCHEL and Hannah
26 Feb 1775 at Ditchling, son of William MICHEL and Ann
A Thomas Mitchell aged 89 years was buried at Chailey on 8 Aug 1834 ("workhouse"). Could this be John's father?
If the 1768 baptism is correct then the parents are Thomas MITCHELL and Elizabeth COTTINGHAM, married 29 Sep 1767 at Westmeston which is not far from Ditchling or Streat.1,2 - Marriage*: John Mitchell married Mary Bull, daughter of William Bull and Sarah Bashford, on 10 October 1795 at Ditchling, Sussex, EnglandB.2
- Anecdote: This could be a second marriage for John MITCHELL. There is a marriage to Elizabeth CORNFORD on 4 Aug 1793 at Ditchling. An Elizabeth MITCHELL was buried at West Chiltington on 22 Jan 1795 (but no information as to whether she was John's wife and West Chiltington is a fair distance from Ditchling).2
- Occupation*: John Mitchell was a labourer in 1813.1
- Anecdote: John's wife Mary was buried 10 May 1814 at Chailey, 41 years old. Did John re-marry?
- Anecdote: Possible burials are:
25 Feb 1834 at Cuckfield, age 58 years
11 Apr 1818 at Steyning, age 47 years
There may be others.3 - Anecdote*: The following will may be connected to this family:
