John Mitchell

• Anecdote: All we know about John Mitchell at this stage is that he married in 1795 at Ditchling and then lived first at Fletching until 1805 and then Chailey until 1814 when his wife Mary died at 41 years of age. The family's stay at Chailey seems to have been temporary as there are no family burials there apart from Mary's. John Mitchell then disappears and his burial has not been found. The 1768 baptism has been used here so that the family of the parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Mitchell, can be explored in more detail to see if there are any further clues. So please note that it has not been proved that the parents are Thomas and Elizabeth and this is a work in progress. In fact, the evidence is not convincing at this stage so don't assume these are the correct parents.

• Anecdote: This could be a second marriage for John MITCHELL. There is a marriage to Elizabeth CORNFORD on 4 Aug 1793 at Ditchling. An Elizabeth MITCHELL was buried at West Chiltington on 22 Jan 1795 (but no information as to whether she was John's wife and West Chiltington is a fair distance from Ditchling).²

• Anecdote: There is a baptism of an Elizabeth Stoner on 16 Sep 1804 to parents Philip and Frances Stoner which looks like it might be an error and should be for Philip and Elizabeth Stoner. The reason being is that Philip and Frances had Mary bap. 29 Jan 1804 and then Daniel 3 Feb 1805 and the Elizabeth doesn't seem to fit. However there is a gap in Philip and Elizabeth's children which would fit this.
