- Birth*: John Akehurst was born circa 1777 at Sussex, England.
- Anecdote*: In the 1851 census, John Akehurst's widow is living with her married son Thomas Akehurst. Living next door is William Akehurst, 58 years, who is the son of Stephen Akehurst and Hannah Gower. Could this be a clue to John Akehurst's parenatge?1
- Marriage*: John Akehurst married Ann Pocock, daughter of John Pocock and Mary Cottington, on 3 November 1799 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB, Both of this parish. Witnesses: Thomas PANKHURST; Henry BLUNDEN.2
- Anecdote: The identity of the witness Thomas Pankhurst is confirmed by matching his signature on the marriage with his signature on his will proved in 1815. Thomas was a yeoman living at Hailsham where John Akehurst lived and would have been aged about 60 years at the time of John Akehurst's marriage in 1799, so quite senior. There is nothing in Thomas Pankhurst's family to indicate a connection to John Akehurst, so it may have been that John or Ann worked for him or they had no other family to call upon. The other witness, Henry Blunden, witnessed many marriages and is likely to be the parish clerk.
- Residence*: On 7 June 1841 John Akehurst and Ann Pocock lived at Hawks Wood, Hailsham, Sussex, England, John & Ann Akehurst both age 55 years (rounded) living with son William, 25 years.3
