- Anecdote: Another possibility for the baptism is:
John Ashdowne, bap. 11 Apr 1642 at Rotherfield, son of Richard Ashdowne.
Although the name Richard does not appear in any of the later families, the name Nicholas does, which is another son of Richard. - Marriage License: John Ashdown and Ann Elliott obtained a marriage licence on 6 April 1672 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England, both of Rotherfield. Sponsors: John Ashdown and Thomas Sawyer of Chailey.2,3

- Anecdote*: John's marriage to Ann Elliott is interesting in that the Elliotts were a reasonably high status family and the various wills left by Ann's extended family showed they owned land and had money. Ann's grandmother, Constance Hebden, had three sisters who each married into the Newington family, a gentry family in East Sussex.
The Elliott's and John Ashdown would seem to have continued in the role of prosperous yeomen. - Anecdote*: At the Rotherfield manorial court held on 6 Dec 1677: At this court the 1st proclamation is made after the surrender of Richard Elliott & Agnes his wife To use of John Ashdown under condition etc.

In the name of God Amen I John Ellyott of Rotherfield in ye County of Sussex yeoman being sick and weake but of a sound and perfect mind and memory praysed be God for ye same and considering the shortness of my life the certaynty of my death and the immortality of the tyme thereof and being desirous to settle that estate that … God in [his] mercy hath bestowed on me doe make my last will and testament in manner and form as following that is to say First and principally I commend my soule to God whoe gave it me and my body I commit to the earth from whence it was taken to be decently buryed in such Christian manner as my executors hereafter named shall think fit
Item I give unto the poore of the parish of Rotherfield forty shillings to be distributed amongst them as my executors shall direct
Item I doe hereby will order and request that all my debts shall be fully and faithfully satisfied and payed soe soon as my personall and real estate can be sould and I do make nominate and appoynt my loveing cozen Alexander Elliot of Mayfield in ye said County yeoman and John Lockyer of Rotherfield aforesaid yeoman sonn of Thomas Lockyer deceased joint executors of this my last will and testament whom I desire to sell my goods and personall estate soe soon as conveniently may be after my death and herewith and with the money arising by sale of my messuages lands tenements I (John Ellyott) will they shall pay all my debts that I shall iustly owe to any person or persons whatsoever and the better to enable my executors to pay my debts and to perform my will and for other uses intents and purposes in this my will lymitted I doe give all those my lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever in Rotherfield aforesaid which is not already settled on my wife during her life for her joynture unto my said executors Alexander Ellyott and John Lockyer and their heirs to hold to them and their heirs to the intent that they and the survivors of them and the heirs of the survivors of them shall soe soon as conveniently may be after my death grant sell and dispose of the same to such person and persons and his and their heires as they shall think fit and for the most and best rate and price they may or can gett for ye same and the money arising by the sale or sales thereof shall (with the money arising by the sale of my goods and personall estate) pay all the debts that I shall owe at the tyme of my death to any person or persons whatsoever and the overplus thereof after payment of my debts I will that the same shall be payed and divided as hereafter I have limitted in this my will And whereas my father Alexander Ellyott did on the conclusion of my marriage with Anne my now wife settle my messuage wherein I now dwell and some lande thereunto belonging conteyning (John Ellyott) about one hundred and fifteen acres in Rotherfield aforesaid unto my said wife during her life now I doe by this my will corroborate the said Joynture and the Indenture of graunt hereof and I doe by this my will give will and devise the said messuage Lands tenements and premises with the appurtenances unto my said wife for and during her naturall life and from and after her death I give will and dispose the same with the appurtenances unto the said Alexander Ellyott and John Lockyer and their heirs to hold to them and their heirs to them in trust that they and the survivors of them and the heires of the survivors of them shall soe soon as conveniently may be after my wifes death sell the said messuage lands tenements and hereditaments with the appurtenances settled on my wife for her jointure of and for the most and best price they may get for the same and the money arising by the same and alsoe the overplus of the money arising by the sale of my other lands (if any shall be) shall be equally divided to and amongst all my daughters Elizabeth now the wife of Edward Dadswell Anne the wife of John Ashdowne Mary the wife of William Gilbert Ellen Ellyott and Frances Ellyott but my will and mind is that my executors shall lay out my daughter Dadswells part of the money given to her in the purchase of lands and tenements of a good and cleer tytle and shall settle the same on my said daughter Elizabeth for and during her naturall life and after her death (John Ellyott) on the yssue of my said daughter in such manner as my executors shall think fitt and I will that my executors shall discount and keep back out of the money given to my daughter Ashdowne the forty pounds which I give him my son in law Ashdowne on the conclusion of the marryage with my daughter Anne Any thing before in this my will contained to the contrary thereof in any wise notwithstanding and I doe order and appoint that my executors shall pay and allow themselves all such moneyes as they shall lay out about this my will and shall be payd for their trouble and losse of tyme and I give unto them twenty shillings a peece as a token of my love
Item I give unto my wife one bedd bedstedle and all things as thereunto belonging and as they now stand and allow halfe my lynnen
Item I give unto my three daughters Mary Ellen and Frances to each of them a bedd and all thinges belonging thereunto and as they now stand and alsoe all the rest of my lynnen equally to be divided between them
Item I give unto my wife the use of my silver bowle during her life and after her death I will the same shall be sold and the money equally divided amongst my children
Item I give unto my three daughters Mary Ellen and Frances to each of them two silver spoons in testimony whereof I the sayd John Ellyott to this my last will and testament being written in fower sheets to each sheet have subscribed my name and to the last sheet thereof have set my seale the seaven and twentieth day of February 1680.
