- Birth: George William Marchant was born in 1844 at Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- Baptism*: George William Marchant was baptized on 4 January 1844 at Brighton, Sussex, EnglandB.
- He was the son of George William Marchant and Elizabeth Redman.
- Residence*: On 2 April 1871 George William Marchant lived at 21 William St, Brighton, Sussex, England, living with his widowed father, unmarried.2
- Occupation*: George William Marchant was a fisherman on 2 April 1871.2
- Anecdote*: Some family trees in Ancestry.co.uk have his death in Vancouver, Canada.
However, in the 1901 census for Victoria City Johnson Street Ward, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, the George Marchant living there gives his date of birth as 26 Mar 1845 and his year of emigration as 1867.
This does not agree with his baptism on 4 Jan 1844 and his presence in Brighton for the 1871 census (although his occupation as mariner and master mariner fits).
Note that his sister Mary Ann emmigrated to Canada in 1910.3
