b. circa 1584, d. February 1626/27
Parents:
Last Edited: 4 Nov 2021
- Birth*: Leonard Morley was born circa 1584 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.
- He was the son of John Morley and Alice Mockford.
- Anecdote: According to John Howes, "Elizabeth may have been a Lockyer but I cannot prove it."1
- Anecdote: As John Morley’s youngest son and according to the Borough English tradition of Rotherfield, Leonard inherited his father's lands following his death in 1608.1
- (Witness) Will: Leonard Morley is mentioned in the will of John Morley dated 20 January 1607/8 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Marriage*: Leonard Morley married Elizabeth (?) circa 1617 at England.
- Anecdote*: The evidence for Elizabeth being Leonard's wife is:
1. Their first daughter was named Elizabeth
2. There is a marriage of an Elizabeth Morley (widow) in 1629, soon after Leonard's death. - Anecdote: From John Howe's research.1
- Anecdote: On Oct 15 1619 Leonard Morley surrendered Great Hook to George Lockyer. Great Hook appears on the 1597 map as John Morley's cotman land but does not appear on later maps so it is possible that the Lockyers incorporated it into their farm at Hollybridge. On that same date Leonard was granted license to lease 12 acres of bondland called Friseland.
The precise wording for the two above-mentioned transactions from the court rolls of Oct 15 1619 are as follows:
"License is granted to Leonard Morley to let to farm to George Lockier his executors & assigns 12 acres of bondland called Ffriseland from the feast herein B V M (Blessed Virgin Mary?) last past, & he gives for fine 4s."
"At this court it is found that Leonard Morley out of court and since the last court viz Sep 28 last past by acceptance of Edward Latter deputy bedell there in the presence of John Hosmer and William Cherone tenants of this manor, said Edward, John and William being now present surrd one acre with appurts, part of a cotman called Great Hookelying on the south side of the said field called Great Hooke, abutting on another part of the said field towards the north, and the land of George Lockier towards the east or the land of William Ovenden to the south (see map) & the highway between Boreshed & Hamsell Bridge on the west. To the use of George Lockier & his heirs. Comes the sd George & prays etc and he gives for fine 12s. No heriot falls because the tenant remains. Memo that the rent is divided between Leonard & George viz George paying 2d and the said Leonard 11d".
Why Leonard did this is not certain since apparently he remained on the land but looking at the map above the surrender expands the lands of George Lockier which abutt it.
About a year later the following entry was in the records of the meeting dated Dec 20 1620.
"At this court it is found that Leonard Morley on Nov 29 last past surrendered all his parcels of bondland now divided into three parts or parcels called Ffrisefeild contg 12 acres lying near the messuage of George Lockier in Rotherfield viz with the highway leading from Boreshed towards Hamsell Bridge on East, the land of George Lockier on South, the land of John Cheseman & Thos Cheseman on West & North and the land of William Ovenden to the North, to the use of George Lockier or his assigns during the natural life of the said George & after his decease to the use of William Lockier son of George and his heirs. And now come the said George & William & pray admittance and give of fine 6s, do fealty etc." - Anecdote: At the court of Sep 28 1625, Leonard Morley had provided sureties for his elder brother John Morley after a plea of trespass against him by Richard Heath. This is the only record of Leonard’s brother John Morley in the Court rolls.1
- Death*: Leonard Morley died in February 1626/27 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Burial*: Leonard Morley was buried on 28 February 1626/27 at St Denys, Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.2
- Anecdote*: From the Rotherfield manorial records: "They present that Leonard Morley who held certain free lands of this manor (now paid) by the yearly rent of (blank) formerly died so seised and that Richd is his eldest son and next heir & aged 3 years."
