- Anecdote: At the manor Court held on Jun 16 1596 (38 Elizabeth) it was noted that John Morley held a piece of pondland called Marlynge.
At the Manor Court held Jan 18 1596/97 (39 Elizabeth): It was stated that John Morley had approved the taking of oaks being timber oaks from his pondland for the maintenance of the pondland tenements when he did not have the authority to do so. Some to be cut up as fire wood and some to be used for post palings and rails. Because the land in question was copyhold, both it and the trees growing on it were manorial property. So the holder had to get a license from the lord to do anything at all - from pulling down an old ruined barn to building a new one, cutting trees or making improvements to his house or cottage. If he failed to do this, the standard penalty was a forfeit of the property. The bailiff was therefore instructed to seize the premises forfeit to the lord and at the next court the bailiff delivered the lands into hands of the lord.2 - Will*: John Morley left a will made on 20 January 1607/8 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.

- Anecdote: It is possible that Joan was a daughter of Thomas Morley, as there are two property transfers from the Morleys to Joan and her husband John Nynne alias Barber during her lifetime, the first being Bonnett's Cottage in 1530.
- Anecdote*: The earliest reference to a Thomas Morley in Rotherfield comes from the 1509 yearly rents of Rotherfield Church in which it was recorded “Thomas Morley for Drapers on Mich ijd”. Mich means Michaelmas. Drapers is located on the map to the south of and marked George Barber. Sometime after 1509 the property passed to the Nynne als Barber family.
- Anecdote: In 1516 (27 Sep) Thomas Morley acquired Bonnetts Cottage on Rotherfield Hill from Alice Downe in a copy surrender of that date(" 27 Sep 1516 Copy Surrender of Alice A Downe, wd to use of Tho Morley. Small pcl land (?belonging to) a cottage called Bonnetts on Retherfield Hill").
- Anecdote: From John Howes' research:
Either Thomas or his son Thomas was a keeper of Waterdown Park in 1526. This is an area of land adjacent to Eridge Park in the north of Rotherfield, and part of the ancient Forest of Waterdown that stretched into Kent around Tunbridge Wells. This suggests that it may have been Thomas jr who was the keeper as Thomas the father was living in the town to the south in 1526. I also speculate that by 1526 Thomas jr was the tenant at Le Hooke in north Rotherfield which would be in the area of Waterdown Park. As we shall see at his death in 1558 he was in possession of that property. Thomas abused his position as keeper as described below.
Sussex.—Examinations, before Daunce and Lucas, of John Rede of Rotherfeld, keeper of Frankham park, Thos. Wasshenesse of Frant, keeper of Erege park, Thos. Morley and George Maynard of Rotherfeld, keepers of Waterdown park, and Robt. Fermor of Rotherfeld, all servants to lord Abervagenny, who confess to stealing three peacocks from the house of John Maynard at Rotherfeld, and to killing deer in the forest of Asshedown. They deny that their master knew anything of it. (From: 'Henry VIII: December 1526, 11-20', Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII, Volume 4: 1524-1530 (1875), pp. 1198-1212).
What punishment was administered is not recorded.1 - Anecdote: On 11 May 1530 Thomas Morley and his wife Rose surrendered the cottage known as Bonnett's to John Nynde and Joan his wife (On 11 May 1530, Copy Surrender of Tho. Morley & Rose his wife to use of Joh Nynde & Joan his wf. Cott with ?kitchen (coquina), & gdn, in Retherfield also small pcl land of 1/2 acre, & garden belonging, late Alice Downe's"). in 1627 the property was described as “A messuage and garden at Retherfield Hill, of 1 rod, and a barn called Bonnetts, with a Way from said messuage to the barn; Also a parcel of meadow of 1/2 acre, and a kitchen (coquinan) once of Alice Adowne, & a garden once of Adam Farmer”. Transfers of property held by copyhold tenure were known as "surrenders and admissions" and the word "copy" refers to the "title" to the property which was simply a copy of the entry in the manorial court book recording the transfer of ownership.
