- Anecdote*: Title: Lewes Sessions: orders relating to poor relief
Date: 15 Jul 1796
ESRO reference: QO/32/1796-07-15
MITCHELL Thomas, wife Sarah; Henry 5 and Mary infant; JPs' order removing them from Fletching to Lindfield quashed [Thomas MITCHELL of Chailey married Sarah BOTTING 1791 at Fletching]. - Anecdote: Thomas and Sarah had children at Fletching between 1791 and 1811.1
- Anecdote: Note that there is a Thomas Mitchell located at Fletching for the 1841 and 1851 census, and who was buried 23 May 1851 age 83 years. Although his age matches closely to our Thomas Mitchell and he is in Fletching, the 1851 census gives his place of birth as Lindfield, where there is indeed a Thomas MICHELL baptised 30 Aug 1767 son of Henry and Elizabeth. Further work is required to see if this was the person who married Sarah Botting, or is another person. For now, the marriage of this Thomas Mitchell to Sarah Botting must be in doubt. Note Sarah Botting was born Fletching and her family goes back there a number of generations.1
