Thomas Dunstall
b. circa 1555, d. June 1619
Last Edited: 5 Jul 2023
- Birth*: Thomas Dunstall was born circa 1555 at Sussex, England.
- Marriage*: Thomas Dunstall married Joane (?) on 13 August 1581 at Steyning, Sussex, England, both of this parish. [possible marriage]1
- Anecdote: There is a clue to Joane's surname in Thomas's will proved 1619 as one of the overseers is John Frinde of Preston, "my wife neapheu [nephew]".
- Anecdote: The first Dunstall baptism at Henfield is William in 1597. Baptisms for the elder children have not been found, so it is not known where the family lived before Henfield. Thomas does name a Thomas Dunstall the elder of Cowfold as an overseer of his will and there is a marriage of a John Dunstall and Ann Bray on 13 Jul 1562 at Cowfold which may be Thomas's parents, as he names his first son John and first daughter Ann.
- Anecdote: There are two children named John in the family, and Thomas Dunstall's will refers to them as John the elder and John the younger. One suspects that John the elder may be a child to a different mother. His will indicates the potential for some tension between Thomas's wife Joane and John the elder ("I whave no contraversy betwene my said wyfe and my eldest Sonn John about hir dower of my landes in henfold"). Their son Peter Dunstall makes an interesting comment in his will: in the event of the premature death of his children he leaves their portion "to be distributed amongst my brothers and sisters except my eldest brother John who hath no need of this poore gifte". Also, the administration of Joane's estate in 1626 would appear to be given to John the younger (although we cannot be certain), as she refers to John being a yeoman of Brighthelmstone. John the elder would likely have stayed at Henfield on the lands he inherited in 1619 in his father's will (such as the properties at Chestham).
- Anecdote: The following document shows the purchase of property at Chestham, a small hamlet in the parish of Henfield. The properties are bequeathed to eldest son John in Thomas Dunstall's will proved in 1619.
