In the name of God Amen I Thomas Pilbeam of Ardingly in the county of Sussex yeoman being of sound and disposing mind and memory praised be God for the same do this 17th day of December in the 12th year of the reign of King William the third over England Anno Dm 1700 make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following First I surrender my soul into the hands of Almighty God my merciful creator trusting only through the merits of my saviour Jesus Christ to enjoy his blessed Kingdom and my body I will shall be decently buried at the discretion of my executor and executrix hereafter named And As for my worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I dispose thereof as followers first I give and devise until my two daughters Elizabeth and Mary all that my cottage with the appurtenances situate in Ardingly now in the occupation of the Widow Chapman or her assigns to have and to hold the same unto them they said Elizabeth and Mary and their heirs Also I give and bequeath unto my said two daughters Elizabeth and Mary the several sums of £100 apiece of lawful money of England to be paid to them respectively at their respective ages of one and twenty years also I give and bequeath unto my two sons Thomas and George the several sums of £150 apiece of like lawful money to be paid to them respectively at their respective ages of one and twenty years also I given bequeath unto my said two sons Thomas and George the further sum of £50 of piece of like lawful money to be paid to them respectively within 12 months next after the decease of my now loving wife Susanna Pilbeam And if it shall happen that any of my said children shall die before such time or times//
respectively as their several legacies herein before given shall come due and payable that then the legacy and legacies of him her or them so dying shall be equally divided between the survivors and survivor of my said children share and share alike Also I give and devise unto my loving wife Susanna Pilbeam and to my son John Pilbeam and to my loving friends James Tulley of Ardingly aforesaid Yeoman and Ambrose Galloway of Lewes in the said county of Sussex iron master all that my messuage and farm and all those my lands tenements and hereditaments with the appurtenances in Ardingly aforesaid called Townhouse or Townhouse farm and Burstows to have and to hold to the said Susanna Pilbeam John Pilbeam James Tulley and Ambrose Galloway their executors administrators and assigns until such time as my youngest child who shall live to attain the age of one in twenty years shall have attained to the said age of one and twenty years upon trust and confidence and to the intent and purpose that out of by and with the rents interest and profits of the said premises they the said Susanna Pilbeam John Pilbeam James Tulley and Ambrose Galloway their executors & assigns shall find and provide as well for the said Susanna Pilbeam and John Pilbeam themselves as also for all other my four younger children sufficient meat drink apparel and all other necessaries whatsoever until my said four younger children shall respectively attain to their respective ages of one and twenty years and shall receive their respective legacies and portions by me herein before to them respectively bequeathed and given as aforesaid and upon this further trust in case my personal estate shall not suffice to pay and discharge my debts and legacies hereby given that then my said trustees shall receive the rents and profits of my said lands so long as that by the same//
my debts and legacies may be fully paid and satisfied and from and after such time as my youngest child who shall live to attain the age of one and twenty years shall have attained to the said age of one and twenty years and that my debts and legacies shall be fully paid and satisfied then I do give and devise all and singular my said messuage farm and lands unto my said son John Pilbeam and his heirs provided always that my said loving wife shall during her widowhood have the sole use of the parlour and parlour chamber in the said messuage in case she think fit to waive or release her dower in the said premises also I given bequeath unto my said loving wife during her widowhood the use of so much of my household goods as by the said James Tulley and Ambrose Galloway shall be thought fit All the rest of goods chattels and personal estate whatsoever (my debts legacies and funeral expenses being first paid and discharged) I give and bequeath unto my said loving wife and to my son John Pilbeam who I make and constitute joint executors of this my last will and testament And I do hereby revoke all former wills whatsoever by me hertofore made and in witness that this my last will and testament is contained in these three sheets of paper fastened together with a label I have thereunto set my seal and to every of the said sheets subscribed my name the day and year first above written Thomas Pilbeam

In the name of God Amen I George Pilbeame of Ardingly in the county of Sussex Yeoman being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect memory (praised be God therefore) do you make and ordain this present to be my last will and testament (hereby revoking and making void all former wills whatsoever by me heretofore made) manner and form following that is to say First I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God my creator and my body to the earth from whence it was taken and as touching the worldly goods which it hath pleased God of his goodness to endow me with I dispose of as followeth I give and bequeath unto Susan my loving wife the one half of my linen to be equally divided in two parts and one part to be taken by her within one month next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Pilbeame the sum of 20 shillings to be paid to him by my executor hereafter named at his age of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first happen and whereas there is the sum of £50 which was given unto my sister Elizabeth Pilbeame by her father which said £50 doth rests in my hands my will and my mind is that they said £50 to be paid to the said Elizabeth Pilbeame my sister at the age of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first happen according to the tenor and effect intent and the true meaning of a certain [blank] whereby I am enjoined to pay the said £50 to my said sister All the rest of my goods chattels cattle money or plate and jewels not before by me by this my last will and testament given and disposed after my debts and legacies are paid and my funeral expenses discharged I give and bequeath unto my daughter Katherine whom I make and ordain sole whole executrix of this my last will and testament and I do likewise hereby make my loving brothers John Pilbeame and Richard Alfrey overseers and executors in trust of this my will for and in the behalf of my said daughter Katherine and to see this my will performed my debts and legacies paid and the remainder of the money arising by the sale of my goods to rest in their hands until my said daughter attains her age of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first happen and then to be paid to her and the interest thereof in the interim to be paid by my said executors in trust unto my wife for and towards the educating and bringing up of the said Katherine my daughter and I give to my said overseers for their payment and care the sum of 5 shillings apiece In Witness whereof I the said George Pilbeame have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of April in the one and twentieth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord Charles II by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith Anno Dm 1669
