In the name of God Amen I Thomas Burt of Ditchling in the county of Sussex grocer being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory praised be God for the same and calling to mind the uncertain estate of man in this life do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following First and primarily I bequeath my soul to God who gave it and my body to the earth from whence it came to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor herein after named And as for what part or portion of this world wherewith it it has pleased God to bless me withall I will give and bequeath in manner and form following (that is to say) Item I give will and bequeath to Sarah my loving wife the sum of £100 being part of her portion to her and her heirs forever item I give will and bequeath to my sister Elizabeth the sum of £50 to be paid to her within one year after my decease All the rest of my goods and chattels ready money bills and bonds I will give and bequeath to my brothers William Burt James Burt and Luiey[?] Burt to be equally divided between them by my executor hereinafter named but if it shall happen that my loving wife should be new with child or children and the same live then my mind and will is that my said loving wife and child or children shall have hold and enjoy all and every the goods and chattels lands and tenements I die possessed of, for and during and until such time as my said child or children shall attain the age of one and twenty years and the said Sarah my loving wife to give security for the bringing up of the said child or children and pay to him her or their severall parts portions or dividends of my said estate at such time expressed as aforesaid but if my said loving wife shall happen not to be with child or children at the time of my decease and having none by me before that then my said will and devise before mentioned shall stand good and remain as the same is before in this my said will contained and expressed and I do hereby make my loving father Walter Burt whole & sole executor to this my last will and testament allowing him all his necessary charges that he shall and may be at in the discharge of the same giving him full power and authority to perform the same as also to take an inventory of all my goods pay my debts prove this my last will and testament pay and discharge all my funeral expenses that this is my last will and testament and no other In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 14th day of May in the first year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George by the grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland king defender of the faith Anno Dm 1715

In the name of God Amen I Richard Burt of Cuckfield in the county of Sussex Tanner (being of sound mind and memory praised be God therefore) do this 6th day of May in the year of our Lord 1742 make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following First I recommend my soul to God that gave it and my body I desire may be decently buried and my worldly estate I dispose of as follows//
First I give and bequeath unto my daughters Martha and Sarah the several sums of £100 apiece of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to them respectively at the end of 12 months next after my decease by my executor hereafter named also I give and bequeath unto my son Richard £20 to be paid to him in the manner and proportions hereafter mentioned that is to say 5 and 20 shillings at the end of every quarter of a year from the time of my decease until the whole sum of £20 shall be fully paid if he shall live to receive the same in that manner to be paid him by my said executor Also I give and devise to my son Stephen and his heirs forever all the tithes of corn and grain yearly increasing renewing and growing on my copyhold lands now in my own occupation called Brookhouse Lockyers and Lanners and also all my other portion of tithes in Cuckfield aforesaid Also I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Martha my large silver tankard all the rest of my plate I give to my said son Stephen and my daughters Martha and Sarah equally to be divided between them also I give an bequeath to each of my said daughters Martha and Sarah 2 pairs of fine sheets one fine table cloth and six napkins all the rest of my linen and household goods I give and bequeath to my said son Stephen but my will is that he shall permit and suffer my said wife to make use thereof during such time as they shall live together in my said house called Leonards and in case either of them shall be minded to remove from them and live elsewhere then my will is that my said wife shall and may have and take to her own proper use so much of my said household goods to be chosen by herself as shall amount to the value of £30 to be valued and appraised by two persons the one to be chosen by my said son Stephen and the other by my said wife Also I give and devise my small copyhold messuage and lands called Goldings or Goldsmiths unto Henry Gatland of Cuckfield aforesaid Gentleman and John Gatland of Cuckfield aforesaid clockmaker and their heirs Upon Trust that they and the survivor//
of them and his heirs shall permit and suffer my said son Richard to exercise the rents and profits thereof during his natural life and after his decease shall surrender and convey the same to the heirs of the body of my said son Richard forever and for want of such issue to my son Stephen and his heirs Also I give and devise unto the aforesaid Henry Gatland and John Gatland and their heirs all that my messuage and all those my lands called Pointers in West Grinsted in the said county of Sussex and all other my lands in West Grinsted Upon Trust that they and the survivor of them and his heirs shall as soon as conveniently may be make sale of the same for the most money that can be gotten and pay off the mortgage thereon and shall pay the overplus of the money raised by such sale to my said son Stephen All the rest of my goods chattels stock leather hides skins and personal estate whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my said son Stephen whom I make sole executor of this my last will and testament revoking all former wills by me made In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written -Richard Burt- my will also is and I hereby give to my said daughter Sarah one chest of drawers now standing in the hall chamber of the house I now live in -Richard Burt-
