The only other entries for Thomas and Elizabeth in Newhaven were the baptism of daughter Mary on 31.5.1762 and her later burial on 15.1.1763. The Sussex Marriage Index has a marriage for Thomas HOLLANDS and Elizabeth BECKET, 22.5.1757, both of & at Newhaven. It is therefore possible that Thomas is the brother of Sarah HOLLANDS.

• Married Name: As of 8 September 1801, her married name was Morris.
• Anecdote: Joseph Morris is recorded on the tithe survey of 31 Mar 1841 as living in Framfield on plot 1482 which contained four houses and gardens. The owner was John HOLMAN and the occupiers were Joseph MORRIS, [blank] REEVES, [blank] TURNER, William STEVENS and Richard THOMAS. The location of plot 1482 is shown on these maps.⁴
  
• Anecdote: Note that a John HOLMAN witnessed the marriage of Sarah Breach's parents in 1782 at Hamsey.
• Residence: On 7 June 1841 Sarah Breach and Joseph Morris lived at Bird in Eye, Framfield, Sussex, England.⁵
• Residence*: On 30 March 1851 Sarah Breach and Joseph Morris lived at 34 Bird in Eye, Framfield, Sussex, England, living with son Nelson who is noted as deaf in the later 1861 census. She gives her age as 69 years born Hamsey. Living close by at 38 Bird in Eye was their son William and family.¹
• Occupation*: Sarah Breach was a pauper (formerly agricultural labourer) on 30 March 1851.¹
• Death*: Sarah Breach died on 7 January 1854 at Framfield, Sussex, England^B. Her age is stated as 72 years and she died of cerebral disease.⁶
• Burial*: Sarah Breach was buried on 13 January 1854 at Framfield, Sussex, England^B, age given as 72 years.⁷
• Anecdote*: Discussion:
  There are two Sarah Breachs - one who married Joseph Morris in 1801 (born c1782) and another who married John Skinner in 1818 (born c1791). Both say in the 1851 census that they were born in Hamsey - one c1782 and one c1791 (*** see details later in this note on how Sarah Skinner was located in the 1851 census).
  In the SFHG baptisms index we find:
  1. Only one Sarah Breach baptism at Hamsey (30 Apr 1786).
  2. There is a Sarah Breach baptised on 7 Aug 1791 at Little Horsted to Thomas and Sarah Breach. The close proximity of Hamsey to Little Horsted means that this Sarah could very likely be born at Hamsey. A person having a place of birth at Hamsey but a baptism at Little Horsted is not unreasonable.
  Given our Sarah Breach who married Joseph Morris had the earlier birth (c1782 vs 1791) and the earlier marriage (1801 vs 1818) I think we can be justified in selecting the 1786 baptism at Hamsey for her. The Sarah Breech who married John Skinner in 1818 is therefore the one baptised at Little Horsted in 1791.
  One concern which should be noted is the diecrepency between Sarah's baptism (1786) and her age in the 1851 census and on her death certificate which gives her birth c1782. It is possible that she was not baptised due to religious nonconformity and if so we may have a third Sarah Breach at Hamsey that has not been identified, in which case the 1786 baptism is the wrong Sarah Breach.
  *** Locating Sarah Breach (who married John Skinner in 1818) in the 1851 census:
  John Skinner appears to have died between 1825 and 1830 as Sarah married again: Sarah Skinner (widow) to Edward Tippen, 13 Dec 1830 Lewes St John Southover. His burial has not been found although there are possibilities in the SFHG Burials Index.
  Then there is the marriage of Sarah Tippen (widow) to Stephen Taylor (widower) on 24 Jan 1836 at Lewes St John Southover. They are in the 1851 census and Sarah's birthplace is Hamsey, c1791. She is living with daughter Winifred Skinner, which would validate this chain of marriages. Winifred Skinner was baptised 27 Apr 1820 (born 27 Dec 1819) father John Skinner (mother not named). Abode: Southover.

Nelson Morris

• He was the son of Joseph Morris and Sarah Breach.

• Occupation*: Nelson Morris was a lath render, and he is noted as being deaf on 30 March 1851.
• Marriage*: Nelson Morris married Eliza Pelling in 1856 at Tonbridge, Kent, England^B, surname spelt MORRISS.¹
• Residence*: On 7 April 1861 Nelson Morris and Eliza Pelling lived at 4 Mary Vale, Tonbridge, Kent, England.
• Residence: On 2 April 1871 Nelson Morris and Eliza Pelling lived at Albert St, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.
• Residence: On 3 April 1881 Nelson Morris and Eliza Pelling lived at 26 Rochdale Rd, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.
• Residence: On 5 April 1891 Nelson Morris and Eliza Pelling lived at 39 Rochdale Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, with son Charles.
• Occupation: Nelson Morris was a lath render on 5 April 1891.
• Death*: Nelson Morris died in 1896 at Maidstone, Kent, England^B. Age 67 years.²

Benjamin Funnell

Parents:

• Birth*: Benjamin Funnell was born on 30 December 1796 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England^B.¹
• He was the son of Richard Funnell and Elizabeth Inkpen.
• Baptism: Benjamin Funnell was baptized on 5 February 1797 at Chiddingly, Sussex, England^B.¹
• Anecdote*: Note that there is another Benjamin Funnell born at Chiddlingly 3 Aug 1800 (bap. 24 Sep 1800) son of Benjamin and Elizabeth who requires accounting for. In the 1841 census this Benjamin is living at The Dicker with his parents Benjamin and Ann (re-marriage 1812 at Ripe) as Benjamin jnr and wife Elizabeth, children: Henry 15, Elizabeth 12, Mary 10, Lucy 8, Phillis 3 and Noah 3m.
  According to the baptism register, the son Henry was baptised 30 Apr 1826 at Chiddingly to Benjamin and Elizabeth. This was their first (at Chiddingly) suggesting this was the marriage of Benjamin Funnell and Elizabeth TURNER in 1826 (see below).
• Anecdote: Possible marriages are:
  1. 15 Jun 1822 Benjamin FUNNELL and Elizabeth AGATE at Ifield, both of this parish. First child Sarah baptised at Crawley 13 Apr 1823 (abode Ifield). Then Maria bap. 25 Jun 1826 at Slaugham and Henry bap. 23 Nov 1828 at Slaugham. In the 1841 census they are living at Shepherd's Field, Lower Beeding. Children Henry 12, Martha 9, Helen 6 and Mary 4. Benjamin was buried at Ifield on 6 Jul 1841, age 47 years, (of Beeding). The age 47 years puts his birth at c1794 which is a bit early for our Benjamin and he is probably the Benjamin Funnell baptised 1793 at Crawley - so this is discounted.
  2. 25 Jan 1825 Benjamin FUNNELL and Elizabeth TURNER at Chiddingly, both of this parish. Benjamin was buried 19 Jan 1842 at Chiddingly age 41 years, supporting the theory that his was the later baptism at Chiddingly (plus see note above) - so this is discounted.
  3. 29 Apr 1827 Benjamin FUNNELL and Jane HOAD at Brighton, both of this parish. Daughter Mary Ann baptised 23 Dec 1827 at Brighton. 1851 census has Benjamin born Warbleton - so this is discounted.
  4. 23 Sep 1832 Benjamin FUNNELL and Harriet SIMMONS at Chalvington, Benjamin of Chiddingly, Harriet of this parish - this one is the most probable.²

• Marriage*: Benjamin Funnell married Harriet Simmons on 23 September 1832 at Chalvington, Sussex, England^B, Benjamin of Chiddingly; Harriet of this parish.²
