Richard Funnell
b. circa 1765, d. 1848
Parents:
Father: (?) Funnell b. c 1735
Last Edited: 8 May 2023
- Birth*: Richard Funnell was born circa 1765 at Sussex, England; ages from census and death records give a birth year ranging from c1765 to c1769.
- He was the son of (?) Funnell.
- Anecdote: The only possibilities for Richard's baptism found so far (from the SFHG baptism index between 1755 and 1770) are:
20 Jan 1760 at Barcombe, Richard son of William and Jane FUNNELL (note: Jane FUNNEL buried at Barcombe 1803 age 76 yrs).
8 Feb 1773 at Chiddingly, Richard FUNNELL baptised (an adult). No parents given. [probably the most likely]
21 Aug 1775 at Chiddingly, Richard DUNK FUNNELL, illegitimate son of Elizabeth FUNNELL. (Interesting but probably a bit late for our Richard FUNNELL given that he married in 1792 and his ages quoted at death and in census's consistently indicate an earlier birth by about 10 years).
On his marriage record, Richard is stated as "of Ripe" suggesting he may have been born there. However, there is no baptism record at Ripe for him. There is a tantalising record in an earlier generation though:
Richard FUNNEL baptised at Ripe 25 Dec 1699 son of Rachel FUNNEL (base born).
Connected to this is: Lewes Sessions: 12-13 Jul 1705: orders relating to poor relief: FUNNELL Richard, and a female surnamed FUNNELL; JPs order removing them from Ripe to Chiddingly set aside; the said Richard to go with his mother until he is seven years old.(ESRO: QO/12/1705-07-12.)1 - Marriage Bann*: Marriage banns for Richard Funnell were published on 24 June 1792 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB; banns read on 24 June, 1 July and 9 July 1792.2
- Marriage*: Richard Funnell married Elizabeth Inkpen, daughter of John Inkpen and Sarah Gladman, on 9 July 1792 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB, Richard is "of Ripe" and Elizabeth is age 23 year "of Laughton", surname INKPIN. Witnesses: Benjamin Coalman and John Vine.3
- Anecdote: Richard's first wife Elizabeth Inkpen died in 1809 aged 40 years.
- Marriage*: Richard Funnell married Ruth Sharrard on 6 January 1813 at Chiddingly, Sussex, EnglandB, (Ruth JENNER) both of this parish.3
- Anecdote: Richard's second marriage was to Ruth Jenner, a widow, although the marriage record does not identify her as such. Richard was her third husband, her previous husband, Stephen Jenner, died in 1812 at Chiddingly and before that, her first husband, John Hammond, died in 1789 at Chiddingly.
Ruth had eleven children in total, although none with Richard Funnell. - Occupation*: Richard Funnell was a brick maker in 1821.4
- Anecdote: Chiddingly is one of those rare parishes where the 28 May 1821 census has survived with a detailed description of the inhabitants, similar in format to the 1841 census. Richard and Ruth were living at Rooker, a large cottage :
Richard Funnell 56 yrs Brickmaker; Ruth Funnell 63 yrs; Henry Funnell 21 yrs; Stephen Funnell 13 yrs; Edward Jenner 12 yrs; George Jenner 9 yrs.4 - Residence*: On 7 June 1841 Richard Funnell lived at The Street, Chiddingly, Sussex, England, a widower age 73 years, living with his widowed son Henry and children John (15 years), Caroline (11 years) and Martha (5 years).5
- Death*: Richard Funnell died in 1848 at Chiddingly, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Burial*: Richard Funnell was buried on 5 January 1848 at Chiddingly, Sussex, EnglandB, "Abode: Hailsham Workhouse; age 79 years."6,7
- Anecdote*: Richard was living in the Hailsham Union workhouse when he died, according to the Chiddingly parish burials register. However, there is no discharge recorded in the Hailsham Union workhouse records, nor the register of deaths for the Hailsham Union, nor can his death certificate be found. It may be that he was living in one of the old workhouses, not the new Union workhouse.8

Elizabeth Inkpen
b. 12 March 1769, d. 1809
Parents:
Last Edited: 7 May 2023
- Birth: Elizabeth Inkpen was born in 1769 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: Elizabeth Inkpen was baptized on 12 March 1769 at All Saints, Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- She was the daughter of John Inkpen and Sarah Gladman.
- Anecdote*: In the parish records for Laughton there are three possibilities for Elizabeth Inkpen:
bap. 12.3.1769 Elizabeth dau. of John and Sarah Inkpin. (John Inkpin m. Sarah Gladman 30.6.1766, Laughton, witness William Gladman and Richard Vine)
bap. 17.10.1769 Elizabeth dau. of Edward and Ann Inkpin. (Edward Inkpin m. Ann Fennall 10.4.1767, Laughton)
bap. 16.5.1773 Elizabeth dau. of Edward and Susannah Inkpin.
It is most likely that the first baptism is the correct one as the burials for Laughton record Ann Inkpin, buried 7.10.1769 and Elizabeth Inkpin, buried 11.3.1770 (mother and daughter). The Laughton register has banns for Edward Inkpen and Susannah Cossam (Cosham?) of Ringmer with the marriage occurring in Ringmer on 6.4.1772 (IGI). If the marriage states that Edward is a widower then it would confirm that Edward had two marriages, first to Anne Fennell and then to Susannah Cossam. Another factor is that Richard and Elizabeth named their first child John, probably after Elizabeth's father. Also, the witness to their marriage was Benjamin Coalman who married Sarah Inkpen, daughter of John and Sarah Inkpen on 25.4.1787 at Laughton. - Marriage*: Elizabeth Inkpen married Richard Funnell, son of (?) Funnell, on 9 July 1792 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB, Richard is "of Ripe" and Elizabeth is age 23 year "of Laughton", surname INKPIN. Witnesses: Benjamin Coalman and John Vine.2
- Married Name: As of 9 July 1792, her married name was Funnell.
- Death*: Elizabeth Inkpen died in 1809 at Chiddingly, Sussex, EnglandB.

John Akehurst
b. 19 December 1751, d. 1829
Parents:
Last Edited: 7 May 2023
- Birth: John Akehurst was born in 1751 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: John Akehurst was baptized on 19 December 1751 at St Peter & St Paul, Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB, surname ACKHURST.1
- He was the son of John Akehurst and Elizabeth Burwash.
- Anecdote*: Discussion ********
Possible baptisms for John Akehurst are:
12.12.1751 John son of John and Elizabeth Ackhurst, and
4.10.1752 John son of John and Elizabeth Akehurst.
Which one is the John Akehurst who married Elizabeth Collen (who I will call JOHN1), and which is the John Akehurst who married Lucy Rippington (JOHN2)?
JOHN1 was buried on 14 Apr 1829 age 78 years, while JOHN2 was buried on 17 Dec 1831 age 79 years (as proved by his will). The latter burial would imply that JOHN2 was born between 18 Dec 1751 and 17 Dec 1752 which would agree with the 1752 baptism. The former burial would imply that JOHN1 was born between 15 Apr 1750 and 14 Apr 1751 which doesn't fit any of the baptisms. However, the data (which may be incorrect!) implies that JOHN1 was older than JOHN2, so the best assumption for now appears to be that the 1751 baptism is for JOHN1 and the 1752 baptism for JOHN2.
Now, the next problem is matching the baptisms to the two marriages:
John Akehurst and Elizabeth BURWASH on 24 Jun 1751 at Hellingly.
John Akehurst and Elizabeth FULLER on 14 Nov 1751 at Hellingly.
At this stage we can only make an assumption and I feel the best one would be that JOHN1 is the son of Elizabeth BURWASH given that he would have been baptised 6 months after the marriage, a fairly common occurrence. JOHN2 would then have been baptised the son of Elizabeth FULLER 13 months after the marriage. The alternative (if JOHN1 was the son of Elizbeth FULLER) would mean that he was baptised just one month after the marriage. Given that he was not noted as illegitimate, and that baptisms usually occurred about one month after the birth, this would seem to be the least likely answer.
Note that there is also a burial in Alfriston of a John Akehurst on 9 Jan 1828 with age given as 77 years which may account for the 1751 baptism. This would put his birth between 10 Jan 1750 and 9 Jan 1751. HOWEVER, there may be a c1751 baptism at Alfriston that we dont know about as there are crucial gaps in the records there, so this is being ignored for now. Needs further work.
********. - Anecdote: In the Poor Law records for Hellingly 1757 there is an entry: Thomas Lucas agrees to take and keep John Akehurst from Lady Day 1757 to Lady Day 1758 for three pounds and ten shillings

- Marriage*: John Akehurst married Elizabeth Collins, daughter of Charles Collins and Lydia Goodwin, on 26 December 1776 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB, Elizabeth's surname spelt COLLEN. Both of Hellingly parish. Witnesses: John Burgess and Henry Blunden.3
- (Witness) Marriage: John Akehurst witnessed the marriage of Mary Collins and Thomas Farrant on 20 April 1778 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB; Thomas of Framfield; Mary of Laughton. Witnesses: John AKEHURST; John VINE.3
- Marriage Bann*: Marriage banns for John Akehurst and Maria Burgess were published on 12 March 1797; Banns were read on March 12, 19 and 26 in 1797.
- Marriage*: John Akehurst married Maria Burgess, daughter of J Prodger and Elizabeth Burgess, on 4 February 1798 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB. John was a widower. Witnesses to the marriage were John Burgess and Henry Blunden (the parish clerk).3
- Anecdote*: John was a widower when he married Maria Burgess in 1798. He was 45 years old and she was 19 years. John's previous wife, Elizabeth Akehurst (nee Collen/Collin) was buried on 4.11.1792 at Hellingly ("wife of John, poor").
- Anecdote*: On 16 April 1801 at the Lewes Quarter Sessions, a John Akehurst of Hellingly was committed to Lewes house of correction for running away and leaving his wife and family chargeable to Hellingly, adjudged a rogue and vagabond, recommitted for 6 weeks then discharged. Not sure if this is for "our" John Akehurst. (ESRO: QO/34/1801-04-16.)
- Death*: John Akehurst died in 1829 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Burial*: John Akehurst was buried on 14 April 1829 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB, "age 78 years."4
- Anecdote: John and Maria's daughter Martha married James Holden in 1826 and had three children (Sally Mariah, Harriet, and Jane Anne) before emigrating to Australia on the ship "Alfred" arriving Sydney 16 Jan 1839. They had a fourth child, Charlotte, born 24 Dec 1840 at Allyn River, N.S.W. (near Dungog, Hunter Valley area).
- Anecdote: John's wife Maria moved to Icklesham sometime after his death. Their daughter Harriet Sargent (nee Akehurst) died in 1835 (buried 17 Jul 1835 at Icklesham "33 yrs, wife of Philip jnr") leaving a young family. It would appear that Maria took over the raising of the children, and is living with Philip Sargent in the 1841 and 1851 census at Icklesham. She died there in 1862, age 91 years.

Maria Burgess
b. 1 November 1778, d. 17 January 1862
Parents:
Last Edited: 7 May 2023
- Birth: Maria Burgess was born in 1778 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: Maria Burgess was baptized on 1 November 1778 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB, (no father given.)1
- She was the daughter of J Prodger and Elizabeth Burgess.
- Anecdote*: Maria is the illegitimate child of Elizabeth BURGESS. The 13 June 1778 Poor Law records for Hellingly contain an entry which may identify the father of Maria Burgess as J Prodyer/Prodger:
A journey to Lewis [Lewes] with Eliz. Burgess 2s/6
A man & horse to carry her 5s/-
Paid for Warrants 2s/-
Expences in searching for J Prodyer/Prodger 12s/1d
Also of interest:
September 1758: Dame Bradford for Eliz Burgess lying in & keeping one month £2.2 - Marriage Bann: Marriage banns for Maria Burgess and John Akehurst were published on 12 March 1797; Banns were read on March 12, 19 and 26 in 1797.
- Anecdote: However, there was a delay of nearly 12 months between the reading of the banns and the actual marriage, during which time their daughter Jane Akehurst Burgess was born.
- Marriage*: Maria Burgess married John Akehurst, son of John Akehurst and Elizabeth Burwash, on 4 February 1798 at Hellingly, Sussex, EnglandB. John was a widower. Witnesses to the marriage were John Burgess and Henry Blunden (the parish clerk).3
- Married Name: As of 4 February 1798, her married name was Akehurst.
- Anecdote: Maria's daughter Harriet Sargent (nee Akehurst) died in 1835 (buried 17 Jul 1835 at Icklesham "33 yrs, wife of Philip jnr") leaving a young family. It would appear that Maria took over the raising of the children, and is living with Philip Sargent in the 1841 and 1851 census at Icklesham. Maria's husband John Akehurst had died in 1831 at Hellingly. It looks like she was in demand as in the 1861 census at age 90 years she is living with her widower grandson, James Sargent (27 years), his son Francis Sargent (3 years) and servant/housekeeper Harriet Hall (14 years). A dedicated mother to the end.
- Residence: On 7 June 1841 Maria Burgess lived at Brook Farm, Icklesham, Sussex, England, age 65 years, living with son-in-law Philip Sargent (a widower at that time) and family. The 1841 census does not say if Maria was a widowor not, but there is no husband listed.4
- Residence*: On 30 March 1851 Maria Burgess lived at Icklesham, Sussex, England, age 77 years, widow, living with son-in-law Philip Sargent and family.5
- Residence*: On 7 April 1861 Maria Burgess lived at Icklesham St, Icklesham, Sussex, England, age 90 years, widow, born Hellingly. Surname AKHURST. She is living with her widower grandson James Sargent (27 years), his son Francis Sargent (3 years) and servant/housekeeper Harriet Hall (14 years).6
- Death*: Maria Burgess died on 17 January 1862 at Icklesham, Sussex, England, at age 83.7
- Anecdote: Note that Maria's death certificate states that her husband's name is William Akehurst. This is considered to be a mistake and should be John Akehurst. The informant was her grandson, James Sargent, present at the death. She died of old age.
- Burial*: Maria Burgess was buried on 22 January 1862 at All Saints & St Nicholas, Icklesham, Sussex, EnglandB, "91 years."8

Elizabeth Burgess
b. circa 1760
Last Edited: 7 May 2023
- Birth*: Elizabeth Burgess was born circa 1760 at Sussex, England.
- Anecdote: The parents of Elizabeth Burgess are unknown. An Elizabeth Burgess was baptised 29.8.1762 at Hellingly, daughter of John and Charity Burgess, but a burial of an infant Elizabeth Burgess is recorded there on 17.11.1762. Also, an Elizabeth Burges was baptised 27.3.1737 at Hellingly, daughter of Nic. and Mary Burges. However, an Elizabeth Burgiss was buried on 31.12.1752 at Hellingly.
My working theory for now is the possibility that Elizabeth Burgess was bap. 13 Apr 1755 at Ripe daughter of William Burgess & Mary Elfick. Their son John Burgess bap. 1 Apr 1750 may be the one who married Elizabeth Askew on 9 May 1772 at Ripe and who had a daughter Sarah bap. 4 Aug 1776 at Arlington. This Sarah Burgess is in the family tree of a DNA match to the author (Ancestry user: Sharon Dormer, yet to be fully investigated as there could be other connections which explain this although shared matches are all in the right line). Also, the parish of Arlington crops up in many of the facts known about the elusive Elizabeth Burgess, mother of Maria baptised 1778 at Hellingly. A witness to Maria Burgess's marriage in 1798 was John Burgess, who could be the brother of Elizabeth (John Burgess was buried 1804 at Arlington). - Anecdote: The 13 June 1778 Poor Law records for Hellingly contain an entry which may identify the father of Maria Burgess as J Prodyer/Prodger:
A journey to Lewis [Lewes] with Eliz. Burgess 2s/6
A man & horse to carry her 5s/-
Paid for Warrants 2s/-
Expences in searching for J Prodyer/Prodger 12s/1d.1 - Anecdote*: In September 1778, in the Poor Law records for Hellingly, it is recorded "Dame Bradford for Eliz Burgess lying in & keeping one month £2"
(stopped search April 1781, Film # 004427619; image 384.)1 - Anecdote: November 1778: Two days journey to search for J Prodyer[sic] 5s/1d
Expenses for Mr Gower & myself 18s/-.2 - Anecdote: A possible marriage is: 12 Aug 1783 at Westham the marriage of James Prodger and Elizabeth Burgess. James is of Arlington and Elizabeth of this parish (Westham).3
- Anecdote: Poor Law records for Hellingly on 5 May 1790: Paid Eliz Burgess when she lay in at Arlington £2. Soon thereafter Elizabeth starts receiving a regular monthly payment from the parish. According to the Sussex baptism index Elizabeth Goldsmith Burgess was baptised at Arlington on 16 May 1790 daughter of Elizabeth Burgess, illegitimate. The father may be John Chapman as on 24th May there is an expense item: "Journey to Arlington after John Chapman 2s/6d", although the middle name of Goldsmith would normally indicate that as the father's surname.4,5
- Anecdote: Poor Law record: 1790: Paid Master Clark for keep of Elizabeth Prodger and mending of shoes £1 0s 6d. An Elizabeth Proger[sic], infant, was buried 22 Feb 1793 at Hellingly.6,7
- Anecdote: The above records are confusing: was she known as both Elizabeth Burgess and Elizabeth Prodger (e.g. Burgess alias Prodger), or are these two separate people?

Peter Terry
b. 21 December 1777, d. 1825
Parents:
Last Edited: 8 May 2023
- Birth: Peter Terry was born in 1777 at Newhaven, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: Peter Terry was baptized on 21 December 1777 at St Michael's, Newhaven, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- He was the son of John Terry and Sarah Hollands.
- Marriage License: Peter Terry and Elizabeth Alce obtained a marriage license on 17 April 1798 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England. Elizabeth age 18 years with consent of father Abraham Alce, East Blatchington. Peter age 20 years of Newhaven, jnr.2
- Marriage*: Peter Terry married Elizabeth Alce, daughter of Abraham Alce and Sarah Richardson, on 18 April 1798 at East Blatchington, Sussex, EnglandB. Peter is "of Meeching alias Newhaven."2
- Anecdote*: Peter and Elizabeth were married by licence which is unusual as marriage was normally by banns (marriage by licence could be performed immediately, the couple did not have to wait for the banns to be read over three consecutive weeks). The record for the marriage licence is contained in volume 26 of the Sussex Record Society publications (Marriage Licences, Archdeaconery of Lewes):
"Terry, Peter the younger of Meeching, otherwise Newhaven, labourer, bachelor, aged 20 and upds, with consent of Peter Terry his father, and Elizabeth Alce of East Bletchington, spinster aged 18 and upds, with consent of Abraham Alce her father: bondsmen, said P.T. and Thomas Simmons of Seaford, yeoman 17 April 1798 [Lewes]"
The information on this marriage licence indicates Peter Terry as the father which disagrees with the information deduced so far (i.e. that John Terry is the father). Certainly, the Peter Terry baptised to John and Sarah Terry on 21.12.1777 at Newhaven is of the correct age, but there may be another Peter Terry (son of Peter Terry) who was the person that married Elizabeth Alce. However, the East Sussex Baptisms Index was searched for the period 1700 to 1790 and no baptism of Peter Terry to father Peter Terry was found. The original marriage licences have been destroyed so it cannot be checked. - Anecdote: Their first son Richard stated his place of birth as Blatchington on the 1851 census but his baptism occurred in Newhaven. Peter and Elizabeth were married in East Blatchington so this possibly indicates that they moved from Blatchington to Newhaven shortly after his birth, or that Elizabeth had returned to her parents for the birth of their first child (a common practice).
- Occupation*: Peter Terry was a labourer.3
- Anecdote: Peter Terry died in 1825 aged 48 years leaving Elizabeth with a young family of eight children. She remained a widow until she died in 1864, nearly 40 years later. Each parish was responsible for its own poor and the 1851 census indicates that she was a parish relief widow (i.e. receiving financial support).
- Death*: Peter Terry died in 1825 at Newhaven, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Burial*: Peter Terry was buried on 1 May 1825 at St Michael's, Newhaven, Sussex, EnglandB.4
