Frances Margaret Ward
b. circa 1863, d. 7 September 1934
Parents:
Last Edited: 15 Nov 2018
- Birth*: Frances Margaret Ward was born circa 1863 at India; death certificate has place of birth as Raja Mahore, India. The birth certificate of her son Hugh Toronto has something different.
- She was the daughter of Edwin Ward and Mary (?)
- Anecdote: A baptism record for Frances has not been found. Her year and place of birth come from her death certificate. At the time of her marriage on 22 Dec 1879 she was residing in Assensole, India and her age was 17 years. Only her father Edwin (no occupation given) and her sister Catherine are named on the marriage certificate.
On Hugh Toronto (Philip) Brown's birth certificate, Frances Margaret Brown (the mother) has her place of birth recorded as Raja....(?), India. Could it be Rajarbagan near Howrah? All this needs further investigation. - Residence*: In 1879 Frances Margaret Ward and Hugh Brown lived at Asansol, West Bengal, India.
- Marriage*: Frances Margaret Ward married Hugh Brown, son of John Hone Brown and Margaret McMillan, on 22 December 1879 at St John's Church, Calcutta, India, witnesses were E Ward, Catherine Ward and E Hindhaugh.1
- Married Name: As of 22 December 1879, her married name was Brown.
- Anecdote: The family moved from NSW to Western Australia c1900.2
- (Witness) Anecdote: Frances Margaret Ward was a witness: Hugh Philip Brown's wife Eva reported that c1913 (when child Hugh was a baby) that there were family meetings concerning the Ward family. Hugh Philip Brown would go off to see his family and tell her "it was none of her business". This was possibly concerning Hugh's mother's sister, Jane Mary Skelton (nee Ward) whose husband mysteriously left her on 2 September 1914 and disappeared. He withdrew all his money from their bank accounts but mailed her a bank book with 150 pounds deposited for her. She received no further communication from him and the courts finally pronounced him dead in 1927. The family meetings may have been about helping Jane, either financially or in some other way. Interestingly, Jane died in Toronto, NSW in 1947 which was Hugh Philip Brown's birthplace in 1891.
- Residence*: In July 1914 Frances Margaret Ward lived at Kenny St, West Guildford, Western Australia, Australia.3
- Anecdote*: Frances was referred to as "Nurse Brown" in the funeral notice for her daughter Florence Mabel Brown:

John Hone Brown
b. 28 August 1831, d. 11 October 1904
Parents:
Last Edited: 11 Nov 2018
- Birth: John Hone Brown was born in 1831 at Stepney, London, England.
- Baptism*: John Hone Brown was baptized on 28 August 1831 at Stepney, London, England, father's occupation is given as baker.
- He was the son of William Brown and Hannah Hone.
- Emigration*: John Hone Brown emigrated in 1833 to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, on the ship "Indiana" with parents William and Hannah Brown and siblings Mary Ann, William and Emma. John's uncle, Thomas Bervin Brown and his wife Ann and children Ann, Eliza, Amelia, Harriet & Thomas also sailed with them. They arrived in Hobart Town on the 9th of September 1833.
- Anecdote: John and his family lived in Hobart Town until about 1840 and then in Launceston until about 1844. His uncle, Thomas Bervin Brown, a wheelwright, moved to Geelong, Victoria in about 1846 and it is possible that John Hone Brown moved across with him, as John's occupation is later recorded as wheelwright and he may have been apprenticed to Thomas. John's father, William, was a blacksmith, but his children's baptism records give his occupation as victualler (in Hobart) and post office messenger (in Launceston). At some stage William and his family moved to Sydney (which may or not have included John). This could have been as early as c1846 or later.
- Residence*: On 12 June 1854 John Hone Brown lived at Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
- Occupation*: John Hone Brown was a wheelwright on 12 June 1854.1
- Marriage*: John Hone Brown married Margaret McMillan, daughter of Hugh McMillan and Isabella Johnstone, on 12 June 1854 at St Paul's Church, Geelong, Victoria, Australia.1
- Occupation: John Hone Brown was a farmer on 12 August 1860.2
- Residence: On 12 August 1860 John Hone Brown lived at Yowang, Victoria, Australia.
- Occupation: John Hone Brown was a farmer on 28 November 1861.3
- Marriage*: John Hone Brown married Jane Gunn, daughter of George Gunn and Ann Cooke, on 28 November 1861 at a private house, Sutherland Creek, Victoria, Australia, according to the forms of the Presbyterian Church. Sutherlands Creek is about 16 kms north west of Geelong.3
- Residence: On 28 November 1861 John Hone Brown lived at You Yangs, Victoria, Australia. It was written as the Parish of "You-ang" his wedding certificate to Jane Gunn. This location had previously been spelt incorrectly on documents as "Yowang". You-ang is an area about 20 kms north west of Geelong and is spelt "You Yangs" today. Wikipedia gives the original spelling of the You Yangs as Youang: The name "You Yang" comes from the Aboriginal words Wurdi Youang or Ude Youang meaning "big mountain in the middle of a plain."4,3
- Occupation: John Hone Brown was a wheelwright on 14 November 1862.5
- Anecdote*: John and Jane's son Arthur John George Brown was born in Britannia Street, Ashby, a suburb of Geelong. The informant was Anne Gunn, Jane's mother which shows that her parents were also living in Geelong. Ashby was once a suburb of Geelong located in the area of Geelong West, west of Latrobe Terrace, between Aberdeen Street and Church Street. By 1850 this area had become known as Little Scotland, and Kildare. At this point, Ashby referred to the area between Autumn Street and Waratah Street. Interestingly, Britannia St intersects Pakington St which is mentioned as the place of death of Isabella McMillan on her death certificate in 1877 (Isabella's daughter Margaret married John Hone Brown). Also intersecting Pakington St is Maitland St, residence of Thomas Bervin Brown when he died in 1853 (Thomas was brother to William Brown who married Hannah Hone). It looks like the Browns and their extended family were well established in Ashby and is probably where they settled after moving from Tasmania c1846.
- Anecdote*: On 20 Jul 1871 John Hone Brown's father, William Brown, died in Redfern, Sydney, NSW.6
- Anecdote: In c1875 John moved to NSW, according to his death certificate.7
- Occupation: John Hone Brown was a farmer on 20 May 1879.8
- Residence: On 30 May 1879 John Hone Brown lived at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, as stated in The Argus (Melbourne) newspaper Friday 30 May 1879 marriage notice for his daughter Thirza:
PONSFORD-BROWN. On the 20th inst., at Seaview-house, Geelong, by the Rev. W. C. Bunning, Walter Silvester Augustus Ponsford, of Portland, to Thirza Hannah, eldest daughter of John Hone Brown, Esq., of Sydney, New South Wales.9 - Death*: John Hone Brown died on 11 October 1904 at Rookwood Asylum, Granville, New South Wales, Australia, at age 73. He died of cardiac failure, senile decay and paralysis.7
- Burial*: John Hone Brown was buried on 13 October 1904 at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Area AN, Section MMMM, Grave No 705.
- Anecdote: John Hone Brown's death certificate gives no mention of his second wife, nor of the child Arthur John George Brown. It just names the three living children, Thirza, Hugh and Martha and says there are none deceased. Given that there was one child, Arabella, deceased from his first marriage, this may mean that both Jane Brown (nee Gunn) and son Arthur were deceased by 1904, and that the informant (the superintendent of the Rookwood Asylum) only had knowledge of the living children and their mother (John's first wife).
The death certificate gives his occupation as wheelwright and also states that he lived 29 years in NSW and 25 years in Victoria. If accurate, it could mean he moved to NSW c1875.7 - Probate: His estate was probated on 15 March 1905 at New South Wales, Australia, Intestacy. Will No: 33423. Brown, John Hone, late of Rookwood, wheelwright. On 15 March 1905 by Act of Court, administration was granted to Hugh Brown the only son of deceased at 73 Redmond Street, Leichardt. Died intestate 11 October 1904. Estate sworn at £19.3.10.10
