- Occupation: William Brown was a tea dealer on 31 May 1792.2
- Occupation: William Brown was a tea dealer of Poplar on 23 April 1794.3
- Anecdote: In Feb 1797 William Brown was tried at the Old Bailey for tax offences related to excise duty on liquor and assault of an excise officer. He was sentenced to 12 months hard labour at Cold Bath Fields House of Correction. William is described as a victualler and keeper of The Harrow public house at Poplar. Testimony in the court case by farmer Thomas French states that he has known William Brown for 10-12 years and that before he kept a public house he had dealings with him for teas and sugars, and that he kept a shop at that time. - Anecdote: In response to the sentence of 12 months hard labour, William Brown raised a petition for mercy, but it appears that it was unsuccessful.5
- Anecdote: The Harrow public house was situated on the corner of Harrow Lane and Hight Street, Poplar. The original hotel was demolished and replaced by The Resolute Tavern in 1937. The site was visited by Julitha Barber (nee Brown) in November 2015.6
- Occupation: William Brown was a victualler on 28 April 1799.7,8
- Occupation*: William Brown was a victualler on 11 June 1800.9
- Anecdote: On 30 Sep 1828 William Brown sells "The Harrow" public house in High St, Poplar to Isaac Walker, John Donnithorne Taylor, and Edwin Walker for 3,308 pounds 5 shillings. The terms were that 308 pounds 5 shillings was paid immediately, and that the remaining 3,000 pounds be paid after 20 years and that interest of 4% p.a. be paid during that time.10
- Residence*: In 1831 William Brown lived at Ivy House, East Ham, Essex, England.
- Anecdote*: William Brown is noted as "late of Ivy House, East Ham" in the death notice for his son William in The Argus (Melbourne) on Saturday 12 August 1871 ("Mr. William Brown, eldest son of the late William Brown, Esq, Ivey-house, East-ham, Essex"). William's daughter Mary Brown (1786-1849), executor of his will, married Stephen Collier c1810 and it is the Colliers who appear to have owned/occupied Ivy House, as it is not mentioned in William Brown's will and after his death it remains in the Collier family. The 1861 census records Thomas Collier, son of Stephen and Mary Collier, as residing at Ivy House next to the Cock Inn and the Post Office. The 1838 tithe map of East Ham was checked and although Ivy House is not mentioned, Thomas Collier does occupy two plots in the centre of East Ham village (plots 162 & 163) owned by Edmond Pycroft Esq. It seems reasonable to assume that this is the location of Ivy House especially as the Post Office is across the road and the Cock Inn almost adjacent to it.11,12

Thomas Bervin Brown
b. 28 April 1799, d. 22 July 1853
Parents:
Last Edited: 2 Jan 2022
- Baptism*: Thomas Bervin Brown was baptized on 28 April 1799 at All Saints, Poplar, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England. William's occupation is a victualler of Poplar. Thomas Brown is 48 days old giving his birth date as likley 11 Mar 1799. The middle name "Bervin" is not recorded.1,2
- Anecdote: Another source has the baptism of Thomas, son of William Brown of Poplar, victualler, and Mary on 28 Apr 1799 (48 days old). Image of original register has been sighted to verify this. The was no record of the name "Bervin".2
- He was the son of William Brown and Mary Stone.
- Marriage*: Thomas Bervin Brown married Ann Sheargold Miller, daughter of James Miller and Ann Davies, on 1 April 1821 at St George in the East, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England, witnesses: Henry Miller and the parish clerk.3
- Occupation*: Thomas Bervin Brown was a wheelwright on 12 January 1824.4
- (Witness) Will: Thomas Bervin Brown is mentioned in the will of William Brown dated 26 May 1831 at East Ham, Essex, England.5
- Emigration*: Thomas Bervin Brown emigrated in 1833 to Australia with wife Ann, children Ann, Eliza, Amelia, Harriet & Thomas. They sailed from London on the same ship "Indiana" as his brother William and wife Hannah Brown arriving in Hobart Town on the 9th of September, 1833. Also on the ship was Mr & Mrs Collier and 2 children (a family relative?).
They arrived in Hobart Town on the 9th of September, 1833. The Indiana was a 4000 ton vessel with two guns. The ship's master was James Webster. There were 14 passengers and 37 in steerage including 30 children. The Indiana then sailed onto Sydney departing 15th of November and arriving 29th of November 1833. The two Brown brothers and a John Collier (thought to be the brother of Stephen Collier who married Mary Brown) received £20 each from the Government in Hobart:
Thomas Brown with his wife, one male child, 3 female children. (Thomas was a Wheelwright).
William Brown with his wife, one male child, 2 female children. (William was a Blacksmith).
John Collier with his wife and 2 female children. (John was also a Blacksmith).
Of interest, is the fact that John Collier's brother William was sentenced to transportation for life on 2 January 1834 at the Old Bailey for forgery against the Bank of England. It is thought that John Collier may have been his accomplice but was never implicated by his brother.6 - Emigration*: Thomas Bervin Brown and Ann Sheargold Miller emigrated circa 1846 to Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The death certificate of their daughter Ann Caroline Lester (nee Brown) states 66 years in Victoria which would put the move at c1845. They lived in a house and smith shop in Maitland Street, Geelong near the Crown Hotel in Ashby.
- Will*: Thomas Bervin Brown left a will made on 7 December 1852 at Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
