  • Marriage*: John Latter married Joan Austen on 9 November 1630 at Frant, Sussex, EnglandB, Joan's surname is given as ALCHIN.3
  • Anecdote: This could be a second marriage as there is a burial in Rotherfield on 12 Aug 1625 of a son of John Latter from Frant (no first name given).4
  • Anecdote: John Latter, yeoman of Frant, contributed nil to the Relief of Irish Protestants 1642.5
  • Occupation*: John Latter was a yeoman in 1642.6
  • Anecdote*: All the baptisms for the children identified here as belonging to John and Joan were recorded with their father's name only. It is possible that there may have been another John Latter in Frant so there is some element of doubt. The use of the name Edward for one of the children, instead of Edmund, is also a concern. It is known that the family had connections to Tonbridge in Kent, so there may be more information to be found there.

Isaac Alchorne

b. circa 1551, d. August 1601

Parents:

Father: Thomas Alchorne d. 1558
Last Edited: 11 Apr 2022
  • Birth*: Isaac Alchorne was born circa 1551 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • He was the son of Thomas Alchorne.
  • Anecdote: Isaac Alchorne was probably born at Rotherfield in about 1551 although there is no surviving record of his baptism.
  • Anecdote: When Isaac's father Thomas Alchorne died in 1558 he bequeathed to Isaac a tenement at Town Row, four swynes of land of the ferling of Town Frith, two swynes of the ferling of Dodd Frith, half an acre of Longley ferling, and twenty-five acres at Towngate, all of which lay in the east of the parish, several miles distant from Alchorne Manor.’.
  • Marriage*: Isaac Alchorne married Joan Alchorne on 16 May 1580 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.1
  • Marriage*: Isaac Alchorne married Barbara Lockyer, daughter of John Lockyer and Sylvester Farmer, in 1596 at Sussex, England.2
  • Anecdote: The marriage of Isaac Alchorne and Barbara Lockyer is mentioned in Catharine Pullein's book (see sources). There is no other evidence for Barbara's existence (no baptism, no marriage). However, we do know that Isaac married after the death of his first wife as he has two sons Adam (1597) and Thomas (1599) before his third marriage to Agnes A'Downe in December 1599. There is some extra evidence for the Lockyer-Alchorne marriage as the will of John Lockyer, proved 14 Jan 1628/29 mentions his sister's son, Thomas Alchorne. Isaac had a son Thomas baptised in 1599.3
  • Marriage License*: Isaac Alchorne and Agnes A'Downe obtained a marriage licence on 17 December 1599 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England, 17 Dec 1599, Isaac Alchorne yeoman of Retherfield & Agnes Adowne of same, maiden; sureties said IA and Edward ADOWNE of same, yeoman, brother of the maiden
This is the licence to marry and the actual marriage in a church has not been found and is not in the Rotherfield parish register transcripts.4,5,6
  • (Witness) Will: Isaac Alchorne is mentioned in the will of John A'Downe dated 7 November 1600 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.7
  • Occupation*: Isaac Alchorne was a yeoman.
  • Will*: Isaac Alchorne left a will made on 13 June 1601 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB: (ESRO: PBT/1/1/11/97.)
  • Will/Adm Transcript*: Note Caveat, 18 Aug 1601 (ESRO: PBT 1/3/2/299E.)
  • Death*: Isaac Alchorne died in August 1601 at Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB.
  • Burial*: Isaac Alchorne was buried on 5 August 1601 at St Denys, Rotherfield, Sussex, EnglandB, "Isacke AULCHIN was buried the 5 daye of Auguste."8
  • Probate: His estate was probated on 20 October 1601 at Archdeaconry of Lewes, Sussex, England.
  • Anecdote: Isaac bequeathed the bulk of his property to his sons John and Isaac. Source: http://www.alchin.info/volume1/volume1_004_part1b_descendants_isaac_alchorne.htm
Need to check if Thomas is mentioned.
  • Anecdote*: The son Thomas Alchorne is mentioned in the will of John Lockyer, as "his sister's son". It has been presumed that this sister is the Barbara Lockyer mentioned in Pullein's book who married Isaac Alchorne, although no marriage has been found.3,2
  • Anecdote*: Notes from Jeff Woodhams (www.theweald.org):
    1. According to Pullein p443 Issac and Joan had an unnamed son who was buried, before baptism, on July 27th 1581 but there is no record of it in the parish registers or in the SFHG index.
    2. Again according to Pullein p443 they had an unnamed daughter buried, before baptism, on January 16th 1593/94. This does appear in the parish register and in the SFHG burial index.
    3. According to Pullein Barbara Lockyer died early in 1599. It sounds like she may have just deduced this based on the birth of Thomas and Isaac's marriage of Agnes A'Downe.
    4. Isaac and Agnes A'Downe obtained a marriage licence from Lewes on 17th December 1599. There is no record of them being married at Rotherfield but there are only 3 marriages recorded for that year so it may have been missed. Pullein says they were married on 17th December.
    5. Pullein doesn't mention him I have included Thomas Allchin as part of the family.2

  • Anecdote: Their son Frank Christopher Burford was killed on 1 Mar 1916 in WW1. Royal Sussex Regiment, 2nd Battalion, No L/10210, Private, killed in action.
Their son George Philip Burford was killed on 9 Aug 1918. London Regiment, 7th Bn, No 355562, Private. There was a story handed down the family via Freda Amy Barber (nee Taylor) that "somewhere in the Marchant family there were twins and when the first one went to war and was killed, the second went to avenge him and was also killed". This probably is referring to the Burford boys, although they were not twins. Another aspect of this story was handed down to Angela Emmerton from her family (descendants of Lily Maria Marchant) who was told that the mother was blind and she found out about the death of her son by one of her children reading the paper to her. It was later found in the 1891 census that Rhoda was recorded as blind so this may also have some truth to it.

  • She was the daughter of William Ambrose White and Jane Harwood.
  • Baptism: Ellen Jane White was baptized on 10 July 1884 at Broadwater, Sussex, EnglandB.

  • Marriage: Ellen Jane White married Cecil Edwin Philip Marchant, son of William George Buckran Marchant and Maria Murrell, on 5 June 1911 at Broadwater, Sussex, EnglandB.1
  • Married Name: As of 5 June 1911, her married name was Marchant.
  • Anecdote*: Information from Joan, daughter of Maria Sarah Marchant:
Ellen Jane Marchant (nee White) met Frederick Deacon when she was visiting her children Donald, Gladys & Rose in the workhouse. Frederick Deacon's children were also there. They had two children: Maria Sarah (Sally as she was known) and a son called Thomas. Ellen Jane left them all, including her children, with Frederick Deacon. Daughter Maria Sarah Marchant did not remember her very much.
After Frederick died Gladys or Rose took Maria in to work for them which didn't go too well, and she left them to join the Wrens. I know she kept in touch with Donald when he was a prisoner of war in Italy and lost contact with him when they transferred him to Italy. We tried to find him through the Ministry of Defence but apart from telling us that he was alive they would tell us nothing else.
Maria was brought up as Sarah Deacon. She only found out she was a Marchant when she joined the Wrens, and that Cecil was named as her father. Her brother Thomas was registered in the name of White which Maria found out when he died. Why Ellen Jane did this and did not register them as Deacon's I do not know. Maria was definitely a Deacon, adored her father and so was Thomas. She was very close to Donald but not so much to the girls. I gather that Florence is the one she called Rose but I know nothing of William.
  • Anecdote: In 1927, Ellen's husband Cecil and their son Cecil James left England for Australia.
  • Death*: Ellen Jane White died on 4 September 1960 at St Francis Hospital, Haywards Heath, Sussex, EnglandB.
