In the name of God Amen I Martha Burt of Brookstreet in the county of Sussex widow being in sick and weak but in body but of a sound and well disposing mind memory and understanding praised be God for the same do this 9th day of February in the year of our Lord 1748 make this my last will and testament in manner and form following First I give and bequeath unto my son Stephen Burt and to my daughter Martha the wife of Richard Stapley and Sarah the wife of Henry Gatland all my linen to be divided between them in manner following that is to say half of the coarsest to my said son Stephen and the remainder to my said daughters share and share alike also I give unto my said daughters all my wearing apparel and rings to be divided between them share and share alike my said daughter Sarah Gatland to have the first choice in the said rings I also desire that my silver tankard the be sold as soon as conveniently may be after my death and the money arising therefrom to be equally divided between my said son Stephen Burt and my said daughters Martha and Sarah share and share alike also I give unto my said two daughters my two best beds and all belonging and to my said son my worst bed and all belonging also I give and bequeath unto three of my grandchildren (to wit) Martha the daughter of Richard Stapley Martha the daughter of my son John Burt and Richard the son of my said son Stephen Burt to each of them a crown a piece in silver also I give devise and bequeath unto my said daughters Martha and Sarah and their heirs all that my freehold messuage or tenement croft of land and coppice situate lying and being in Laughton in the county of Sussex aforesaid with their and every of their appurtenances To hold the same the said Martha Stapley and Sarah Gatland there heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of the said Martha Stapley and Sarah Gatland their heirs and assigns forever and I hereby charge the aforesaid messuage or tenement and lands in Laughton aforesaid with the payment of the sum of £25 in manner as hereafter is expressed that is to say to my son Richard Burt I give £10 to be paid him as soon as conveniently may be after the aforesaid land is sold, to Martha the daughter of the said Richard Burt the sum of £5 to be paid to her as soon as conveniently may be after the said land is sold and the further sum of £10 I give unto Richard the son of the said Richard Burt to be paid him when he attains his age of 21 years and in case my son Richard Burt and he said son Richard happened to die before their legacies become payable then I give thereout £5 to the said Martha the daughter of the said Richard Burt and my will is and I require my executors to pay the £10 before given unto my son Richard Burt in this manner (to wit) at four equal yearly payments after the said land is sold All the rest residue of my goods chattels and personal estate after payment of my funeral expenses I give unto my said daughters Martha and Sarah and make them joint executrixes of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former and other wills by me made In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.
