Jane's father is given as Robert Barber, cabinet maker, and James' father is James Goldsmith, whitesmith. Witnesses are James Thompson and ... Hayman(?). They would have both been 17 years old when they were married, with Jane expecting. It is possible that the marriage took place in London to avoid embarrassment and that they stayed there until the first child was born before returning to Brighton.3

Ann is aged 22 years and gives her father name as George Hoather, a cutler.5
- Psgr List*: James Herbert Goldsmith and Ann Hoather were found on a passenger list on 13 January 1853 at Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Having departed London and arrived on the ship "Six Sisters" with their three children Samuel, James and Mary.6
- Anecdote*: The following notes on the Goldsmith family in Australia were provided by Di Christensen of Melbourne, Australia:
James Herbert Goldsmith was 28 years old when he, with his second wife Ann aged 22 years and James' children from his first marriage - Samuel 10, James 7 and Mary Abigail 5 years - arrived at Point Henry, Corio Bay in the Dutch ship the Six Sisters (Zes Gezusters) in January 1853 from Brighton, Sussex, England. After some time in Geelong, the family travelled to the gold diggings at Ballarat where they settled. At the time of the Eureka Uprising the Goldsmith family were at Bakery Hill, Ballarat East. James was engaged in the saw milling business which was a prosperous undertaking in those days. Ann married again in May 1883 to George Havens, a musician from Long Island, USA. They were married by Martin Hosking, the town Missionary. - Anecdote: At one time James owned a saw mill at Bullarook just out of Ballarat according to the police report attached to his committal to the Lunatic Asylum.
- Anecdote*: On 18 Sep 1877 James was detained by the police in Ballarat after having been found "wandering at large". Their report said that he was destitute, of no occupation, affected with paralysis and intoxicated. He was held in the Ballarat watchhouse where he was examined by medical practitioners and was committed to the Lunatic Asylum in Kew, Melbourne where he was admitted on 19 September. The later coroner's inquest is more specific about his condition on admittance, saying that he had dementia and paralysis of the left side. His residence in Ballarat was given as Ascot Street.
- Anecdote: He is recorded in the patient register of the Kew Asylum. The later coroner's inquest states that upon admission he was sent to a hospital and after a few days was able to sit up in an easy chair. On 11 November he was ordered back to bed on account of symptoms of diarrhoea. He deteoriated from this and died.
- Death*: James Herbert Goldsmith died on 16 November 1877 at Lunatic Asylum, Kew, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, at age 53. He died at 9:30am of disease of the brain and pleuro pneumonia (post mortem conducted).7
- Anecdote: A coronial inquest into his death was held on 17 Nov 1877.
- Anecdote: In all the documentation regarding James' admission to the Kew Asylum and his subsequent death and burial, there is no evidence that his wife or any of his children were aware of these events. The original documentation from the Ballarat police on 18 Sep 1877 just states "has sons and daughters in the Colony but unknown to S. Con. Cowley".
- Burial*: James Herbert Goldsmith was buried on 17 November 1877 at Melbourne General Cemetery, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.7

- She was the daughter of James Herbert Goldsmith and Jane Barber.
- Anecdote: The following notes on Mary Abigail Goldsmith were provided by Di Christensen of Melbourne, Australia:
Mary Abigail was born in 1847 in Brighton, England to James Goldsmith and his first wife Jane Barber. She came to Victoria on the Dutch ship the six sisters (zes Gezusters) in January 1853 with her father James, his second wife Ann and her two brothers Samuel and James. After a short stay in Geelong they travelled to Ballarat living on Bakery Hill, Ballarat East. During the brief battle of Eureka Mary Abigail was hidden down a mine shaft by her father. The Daylesford Advocate recorded "She arrived in Ballarat with her parents before the Eureka Stockade in 1854, and when the fight was on she was placed, with other children, in a hole for shelter. She attended the Wesleyan school, Ballarat from 25 March 1854." In 1868 Mary Abigail married Thomas Barnett ( from Tetbury, Gloucestershire) in St Mark’s Church, Fitzroy. They had eleven children, two of whom died in infancy. Her son Samuel, known as Harry, born in 1884, wrote "that after her first two children died at birth, her doctor told her not to have any more children, as she had a weak heart . How wrong he was; my mother had nine more children after that and she lived to a good age of 84. The doctor that attended then told me she had a wonderful heart’". The Daylesford Advocate of 14 November, 1930 noted: "Her husband gave the Art Gallery the sword carried by Captain Wise when he was shot dead in the fight. It was souvenired at the time by George Bentley, a soldier who handed it to Mr Barnett". The paper reported: "The eldest son is Mr Tom Barnett, who manages a butchers business and daughter is the wife of Mr J Keith, President of Ballarat Benevolent Home Committee and Secretary of the Caledonian Society".
Mary Abigail died in November 1930, and a long obituary appeared in the Ballarat courier on Monday 19th November. - Anecdote: OBITUARY: Another of the few remaining pioneers of Ballarat, in the person of Mrs MA Barnett, relict of Thomas Barnett, of Bond Street, passed away last Friday at noon, after a comparatively short illness. The deceased was born in Brighton, England in 1847, and in her childhood came to Australia with her parents, brothers and sisters. The journey to Australia took four months, and amongst the passengers was the late Mrs Joseph Lakeland. Shortly after their arrival in Geelong, Mrs Barnett’s parents came to Ballarat and were engaged in the sawmilling business , which was a prosperous undertaking in those days. After her marriage her husband engaged in the butchery business till his retirement some five years prior to his death. The late Mrs Barnett was living in Ballarat during the Eureka riots and was hidden by her father, Mr Goldsmith, in a hole with some other children at Bakery Hill. They were left there till after the riot. Mrs Barnett well remembers the fear she experienced whilst the shooting was in progress. The deceased had been practically an invalid since the demise of her husband, some eleven years ago and throughout that long period never complained about her inability to leave her home without the assistance of some members of her family. The funeral took place at the New Cemetery on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended. Amongst the many floral tributes were those from the Ballarat and District Caledonian Society, the Eureka Street State School Committee, Benevolent Home Ladies Committee, Caledonian Society’s Ladies Committee, the Ballarat Cub Masters and others.
The coffin bearers were Messrs Thomas, Herbert, Harry, Willie, Charlie Barnett (sons)and G McGrath, RR Grills, and J Keith (sons in law). Mr James Goldsmith, of Brown Hill, only brother of the deceased , was amongst the principal mourners.
The service at the house and the grave was read by the Rev HF Goss of St Paul’s church with which the deceased had been associated for some 65 years. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr G Ludbrook.
