- Anecdote*: OBITUARY: A very old resident of Ballarat East, one of the pioneer butchers, Mr Thomas Barnett, died early on Sunday morning at his residence, Bond Street, where he had lived since he retired from business. He had not enjoyed good health lately, and his death, although somewhat sudden, was not altogether unexpected. The deceased was born in Hereford, England, in 1844, and arrived in Melbourne in 1847* with his parents and brothers and sisters. After the death of his father he resided for a time with his uncle, Dr Henry Barnett, in the Ballarat District. Mr Barnett subsequently obtained employment at the butchering establishments of Mr Turner, Brown Hill and Little Bendigo** and delighted to recount exciting experiences that befell him when on country trips. In the early fire fighting days he had charge of the pumping station at Lake Wendouree, from where carts used to procure water for fire fighting purposes.
Later on he entered business for himself at the corner of Dana and Windermere Street, Peel Street south, Grant Street and Bridge Street. He retired some eight years ago. He joined the Oddfellows Lodge in 1863 and was an active member for thirty years, and he was a constant worshipper at St Paul’s. Canon Davies made feeling reference to his death yesterday. The deceased leaves a widow, five sons and four daughters. There will be a funeral service at St Paul’s tomorrow at 3 o’clock, and the internment will take place at the New Cemetery.
