- Burial*: William Gladman was buried between 1779 and 1784 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Anecdote*: There are two entries in the Laughton parish register for the burial of a William Gladman (14 Feb 1779 and 28 Nov 1784). It is not possible at this stage to separately identify them.
- Anecdote*: David OBEE, 4124 55th Street N.E., Calgary, Alberta, T1Y 4B6, Canada is a descendant of George GLADMAN, son of William and Susannah. Details of all his research into GLADMAN are contained in his letter of 1.4.1990. This includes a list of GLADMAN marriages 1613 to 1837 from the Sussex Marriage Index (there is no marriage for William and Susannah), and a list of baptisms from the East Sussex Baptisms Index (no GLADMAN's listed pre 1700, earliest baptism is 1721). There appears to be a gap in the records around 1710 to 1720 when William and Susannah would have been married. Were some records lost?
- Anecdote: Note that there is a gap in the Sussex Baptisms Index for Laughton 1703-1829. Further work on Laughton requires access to the parish register transcripts.1

Thomas Gladman

Last Edited: 22 Feb 2021
- Birth: Thomas Gladman was born in 1756 at Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB.
- Baptism*: Thomas Gladman was baptized on 29 January 1756 at All Saints, Laughton, Sussex, EnglandB.1
- He was the son of William Gladman and Susannah (?)
- Anecdote: Thomas Gladman may have had an illegitimate child with Mary Shelley (but never married her). The reason for suggesting this is that there is a baptism, Thomas Gladman son of Mary Shelly baptised 17th December 1775, and a marriage of a Thomas Gladman in 1821 at West Firle which states: "1st regiment of dragoons". Thomas was at the Battle of Waterloo. The following information from Thomas Gladman's military record came from Susan Williams: (TNA ref: WO119/57/117) Born West Firle, Served in Romney Fencibles 1794-1800, 1st Dragoons 10 Sept 1800-26 June 1819; age 24 when enlisted in Dragoons. Discharged because of chronic rheumatism and worn out, age 43. Pension from Kilmainham Hospital. When discharged, 5ft 7and a half inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes, brown complexion, labourer by trade. Well written signature. Sue Williams also writes: "On the marriage of Thomas Gladman bachelor to Elizabeth Huggett spinster 7th day April 1821 one of the witnesses was Ann Gladman (I can't read the other - possibly a churchwarden). It is possible that Ann Gladman was the wife of my Gabriel Gladman as I can't see any other Ann Gladman living in the village at the time. This would also seem to point in the direction of Thomas Gladman, son of William, being his father". Although this is only speculation it has been left here in case more evidence is found.
- Marriage Bann: Marriage banns for Thomas Gladman and Mary Nicholson were published in 1779 at West Firle, Sussex, EnglandB; Thomas is "of West Firle" and Mary is "of Willingdon".2
